Roberto Martinez’s players didn’t do anything to show Wigan Athletic fans that we were in for a good season last week, a beating by the relegation winners elect was not what was ordered, luckily it is just one game and we have the chance to see a better performance against Chelsea this Saturday.

Latics play hosts to a Chelsea team that started the season off how they finished the last, unfortunately so did we. Martinez really needs a reaction to the display last week and it won’t be easy to get something from the rampant Champions, but they said that last season and we managed a very convincing 3-1 win.

As usual the odds are against us, but what is needed is a good display, we want to see fire, passion, desire and above all the chance to see what this team can really do. We didn’t even see a glimpse of any of that against the Seasiders, but it was one game and let’s hope that is as bad as it gets this season.

Chelsea dealt a footballing lesson to the other relegation contender West Brom, hammering them 6-0 and stamping their intentions on the league. They put the Charity Shield disappointment firmly behind them with this display and I hope they are little more cautious away from home.

Latics seem to have had a chat with Charles N’Zogbia and it looks like whatever kept him out of the game last week has been resolved and he may feature this weekend and show that he can be a professional and play for the club that saved him. His impending move to follow Bruce to the Black Cats look to be firmly on hold until they can get anywhere near the valuation of the winger.

Chelsea are voicing that they may well rest Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba after the pair picked up knocks in the opening day annihilation of West Brom. But they have plenty of mega bucks stars to replace them and so I won’t get too giddy about that if it is true.

Roberto may well ring the changes for this game, but it is more than likely that he will get the same team to go out there and make amends for their disastrous start on the previous week. N’Zogbia will hopefully be professional and play football for the team that has paid his wages for the past two years.

All in all it will be a hard day, it always is against the Elite, but as we proved last season, we are capable of the odd upset and if this team plays like I think it can, we should give a good account.
