Wigan Athletic will go to Anfield on Wednesday looking to go one better than the draws they have picked up of late at a stuttering Liverpool side that are hopefully there for the taking.
Liverpool are currently occupying seventh spot in the Premier League and are not looking any better than that position either as under pressure boss Benitez desperately looks for any kind of form to provide his employers with some ray of hope that the Reds will climb to fourth by the end of the season.
Roberto Martinez welcomes back Hendry Thomas to the squad after his one match suspension, but he will have a selection headache ahead of this game as the players that took to the field in the 2-2 draw at Stoke, didn’t actually do much wrong.
The only place that the gaffer could make some changes would at the back, Melchiot in particular must have been very disappointed with his performance and Kirkland must have a good look at his contribution as well. We scored to great goals only to be pinned back by two bits of sloppy defending/keeping.
Due to the fact that there is no competition back there though it will probably be down to this week’s training to drill the concentration and decision making process into the players. I suspect Martinez will go back to the formation before Thomas got suspended, but hopefully he will use the performances on Saturday as a guide to his selections.
Liverpool have no problems really and Benitez will also have a full squad to pick from, we hope that they again have a very average day at the office and we take what chances come our way to get something out of the game. They will still be hurting though from the loss against Arsenal at the weekend, coupled with a memory lane jerker for Bill Shankley organised for before the match, means emotions could be very high come kick off.
The referee for the game is Phil Dowd
