The only team Wigan Athletic has not beat in the top flight is Manchester United and we travel over to the Theatre of Dreams to have our 11th attempt at changing that statistic. Latics are finding their feet now, but will Rooney’s return halt our progress.

It is a ridiculous history we have against united, 10 games (not including the Cup Final loss), 10 losses. We have only scored once at Old Trafford, but once again we start off on equal footing looking to record that first breakthrough against our close neighbours.

It looks like our biggest nightmare in previous encounters will be making a return for the red devils, Wayne Rooney has been out for a few weeks now, but is looking highly likely he will be given the opportunity to cause havoc against us again.

We do however have a near full squad to choose from and lately we have been putting in a decent shift, with bit more luck and the rub of the green we could well have been 8 points better off than we are now

But we aren’t and so we must and will go into this game with a bit of confidence after good performances against Blackburn, Liverpool and West Brom. Taking opportunities is something I know Bobby has been trying to drill into his strikers and in this game we can’t afford to miss any openings.

It won’t be the end of the world losing this game, we certainly won’t define our season there on Saturday, but another great performance will see us give our nemesis a run.

You never know, there could be a lot of silly drunk Latics fans on Saturday night coming back to taunt all those ‘Man U fans’ who watched it in the Wigan bars.
