The Latics make their first league visit to Saint Mary’s to take on Premier League new boys Southampton. After a convincing and sound performance against Manchester City on the opening weekend, this game is going to be difficult for the Latics.
Interesting to note though that it is an old Wigan Athletic goalkeeper who has masterminded Southampton’s rise from League 1 to the Premier League.
Nigel Adkins made over 150 appearances in 7 years at Wigan after joining from Tranmere Rovers. Adkins was part of the Latics side that reached the FA Cup 6th round which is still today the furthest the Latics have gone in the cup.
Over his 7 years Adkins was a great servant for the club and one in a long line of great goal keepers to play for the Latics. Let’s hope that his current goalkeeper, Kelvin Davis, has a nightmare on Saturday and that it is current Wigan number one (26) Ali Al Habsi who has an amazing game.
It is always nice to see former players succeeding, not only playing but also in management, but on Saturday for 90minutes he may as well of played for Bolton.
One thing that will remain is Adkins ability to take the game to the opposition and Wigan will need to raise their game if they want to kick start their season.
