I have spent most of my working life, well the last 25 years, based in bolton and blackburn/darwen and became aware of butter pies because of this, they seem to be a savoury that is perculiar to east lanacashire, (blackburn/accrington/burnley), although they do seem to have a sparodic presence in bolton.
What I can attest to, is having tried them on rare occasions there is no need for any “proper wiganer” to worry about not knowing they exist as they are probably the blandest tasting pie ever produced.
