LOL – You are not wrong there – I’m blaming it on currently being on the Western half of the USA – 7 hours behind the UK!
23 March 2012 at 9:32 am #83864Gotta be on average larger gates than our lodgers as well ! The old rugby town monkey is gonna be on our back until the demise of RL itself I feel ! Might not be that far off actually !!The ‘lodgers’ are set to have a crowd bigger than any WAFC crowd this season though later tonight. ;)
The highest DW crowds since August 2010:
24,268 – Wigan v St George-Illawarra 27/2/11 – around 20000 Wigan fans
24,057 – Wigan v St Helens 22/4/11 – around 18500 home fans
22,043 – Latics v West Ham 15/5/11 – around 16500-17000 home fans
21,379 – Latics v WBA 17/3/12 – around 16000 home fans
21,056 – Wigan v Warrington 25/3/11 – around 17000 home fansThe 5 lowest are all more than likely Wigan RL games I’ll give you that, but the fact is that both sides will average somewhere between 13000 and 15000 HOME fans in a season with the potential of hitting 17000 every now and again.
Three weeks ago against Catalans there were 14450 home fans and last week there were 12600. Tonight there’ll probably be around 18000-18500.?
I’m a rugby fan first and foremost and even I’ll admit that Wigan is NOT a rugby town. Wigan is a football town. The problem is that they don’t support Wigan Athletic. If they did then we’d need the Nou Camp to play our home games in. Both teams have around the same number of fans that attend games but I’d say that the rugby have the more ‘armchair’ fans and the fact that they can turn up for any game they like gives them more chance of hitting a big home crowd than Latics.
Both teams hitting 20k crowds on a regular basis is what a town this size should be aiming for though imho.
I also think we’ll lose tonight btw
23 March 2012 at 11:45 am #83865Egg, all you’ve just done is prove that the rugby fans pick and choose their games more than Latics fans. It shows that a decent proportion of rugby fans are actually turning up for the opposition rather than Wigan themselves.
Do you call that loyalty? However it is good of you to admit it isn’t a rugby town. Maybe you could explain your reasons to the Lord of the Pies.
And Lord of the Pies do you have proof of your ever more desperate statements or is this just the latest in a long line of Warriors fans puerile propaganda attempts to put down our support? You have as much idea as the man in the moon about who is buying tickets and why. Just made up claptrap.

Like I said, they’ll both average around the same number of home fans at the end of a season. Wigan averaged around 16.5k last year and the average away gate is about 1500. Latics average 18-19k and the average away gate is around 3k.
23 March 2012 at 12:48 pm #83873Surely this attendance thing is only relevant if we happen to both be playing at the same time? For the rest of the time people can go to both, either or neither. And there are significant numbers in each of those groups.
There are Latics supporters who support Saints, there are Warriors supporters who support United. And so on. It all proves absolutely nothing.
I’m getting rather bored with this now. As has been said very often – when points are awarded for crowds then I’ll worry. Otherwise, life is too short to get heated about such things. So what if one or other of the town’s teams gets a bigger crowd today, but less tomorrow?
23 March 2012 at 12:58 pm #83877Nothing like planting some choice seeds and watching them bloom !! Listen, the joint revenue of both outfits is good for the club surly !! I am the first to admit that I wasn’t following Latics when the infamous Granada Reports Latics put-down was aired but with the other stuff that went on I can understand why we have this rivalry. Personally I think that RL is slowly dying and RU is the in odd shaped ball sport !
