24th February 1939, Leeds United transferred Jack Milburn to Nowich City. He began a full-back partnership with his brother George in 1930; two years after they signed for Leeds. George left in 1937 for Chesterfield and was replaced by a third brother Jim who stayed at Elland Road until 1952. A fourth brother, Stanley, also had a long League career playing for Chesterfield, Leicester City and Rochdale between 1946 and 1965. Jack Milburn appeared in 401 League games and scored 30 goals mostly from the penalty spot.
Nearer Griff’s birthday, in 1962 Stanley Matthews played his 800th first class match when he appeared for Stoke City against Leyton Orient in Division Two.
