It was the 25th February 1967 and in the 28th minute of the Amateur Cup quarter-final between Highgate United and Enfield (played at Shirley near Birmingham) Highgate centre-half Tony Allden was struck by lightening while clearing the ball. The flash rebounded through four other players and the match was abandoned with Enfield leading 1-0. Allden’s heart stopped but was revived by heart massage. The other players affected were Hugh Doherty, Roy and Eric Taylor of Highgate and Ray Hill of Enfield. Unfortunately Allden died in hospital 24 hours later. He was 22.

Although it was only 1 – 0 at the time of the incident, the potential difference between the teams was much greater than that.

btw Shirley is a suburb of Solihull not Birmingham, as the good folk of Solihull (and indeed Shirley) would point out to anyone making that mistake. One of the landmarks of the suburb is the neatly named chinese restaurant, the Shirley Temple.
