Latics have never won a game on the 2nd May since entering the football league, but the game against Gillingham in 1987 went a long way in securing our place in the play off positions, especially as our hosts were in and around there as well. The 0-0 draw in front of 5,376 was probably a better result for the Gills, but both teams joined Swindon Town in the play off positions.

In 1984 Oxford had already been promoted and needed just a draw to go up as Division Three Champions, with Wigan already safely tucked up in mid table with two games to go, we made it very difficult for our hosts but the game ended 0-0 in front of 8,967 fans.

In 1981 Latics final game was an away trip to the Old Show Ground, goals from Micky Quinn, two goals by David Glenn and a penalty b y Jeff Wright should have been enough to win the game, but Scunthorpe United had other ideas, just 1,704 saw this eight goals thriller as honours were shared with a 4-4 final score.

Good job we’re playing on the 3rd May then.
