Thinking about tonight’s Final. I dislike Abramovich, I loathe Terry, don’t think much of Cockneys, but equally don’t like Germans (they bombed our chippy). Probably have a little sway towards Chelsea.
However, even as a former Liverpool supporter, I found Liverpool being 3 down in Istanbul a few years ago hilarious.
I then got to thinking (I know, I’ve been warned about “thinking” before) and thought that when I was young we unquestionably supported the British team against Johnny Foreigner. Man U winning in 1968 (even as a Liverpool supporter) was something to celebrate, as we’d felt good the year before when Celtic won. I remember being on a train coming back from Rome in 1977 and trackside workers in London clapping as we went by.
We’ve lost something with the money that is now in the game. We’ve lost an easy tribalism – us against them. There no longer is an “us”. And as a result we’ve lost a lot IMHO.
Just an observation, like.
