The Latics are now a League One team after Owen Coyle, Uwe Rösler and Malky Mackay all failed to stop the rot that followed relegation from the top flight just days after the Cup final. According to Gary Caldwell, “the whole club lost its identity” during the ensuing slide – and the task now facing the former club captain is to rebuild it as Wigan’s fourth manager since Martinez’s departure.

Just wonder why they say “the rot that set in following the relegation”. Surely this rot had set in whilst we were in The Premier League and should include Roberto amongst the list of managers.
A more accurate description however would not be a rot as this decline came as all these managers struggled within the financial restraints that had been put on them from above and to give credit here to Bob for him to have kept us in there whilst under those restraints was a job well done.
The article could and should have made comparisons with Latics who have suffered the consequences of having to live within their means and the situation that can arise like it has at Bolton if a club goes along with its head in the sand.
Interesting to hear GC’s wishes and hopes for what he wants to do with Latics but this will only happen by living within our means this time and rightly so. We have had a brilliant journey financed by Whelan and Sky’s handouts and it was fantastic. Let us now show the football world we can do it again but this time starting with a secure financial base that GC has been left to work within even if this doesn’t happen overnight.

As much as you’d like to compare it with Bolton, until you have gone a couple of years without the parachute payments (like Bolton have), then its like comparing Apples with Oranges. The last two seasons have had additional funding by the sales of the remaining premiership players and an FA Cup semi-final. There’s nobody in your squad that has any significant value, so selling a jewell isn’t an option.

Using your parachute payments to pay off those 20 players who left during the summer was a good move, but if you return to the Championship, then the squad you have will need to be bolstered, and that’s when the costs will rack up.

Look Mutty just you worry about SAFC doing a Darlington and Bolton’s woes are not down to having one more season away from the Premier League than us. They have overspent for years without any worries but now their owner won’t put anymore money in. They are lucky Davies doesn’t want his 190 million back. Just wonder what will happen if Sunderland’s owners are not so benevolent with their money.

We didn’t pay any players off. We got money for them or they were out of contract. We saved a fortune on salaries.

Are you on the wind-up, or do you actually believe that?

Under Martinez we beat the likes of United, Arsenal , Chelsea, City and Liverpool and won the FA Cup! Hardly a ‘rot’ setting in.

We survived by the skin of our teeth in Jewell’s second season, and looked to be heading that way again toward the end of Bruce’s time with us. Martinez’s distinction was that he managed us in the Premier League longer than his predecessors, and the inevitable relegation took place when he was in charge.

Yes, there were stricter financial constraints under Martinez, but the ‘rot’ they’re referring to is the core of an FA Cup winning squad failing to perform in the Championship and ultimately getting relegated.

It set in last season for me. Don’t forget that the season before we were a penalty shoot-out away from a successive FA Cup Final (or 6 minutes if you take into account us being 1-0 up) and had James McClean not missed an open goal then we would have been in the Playoff Final as well.

Then in the summer we had players touting moves here and there and then when they didn’t happen they spat their dummies, under performed, had the Manager sacked and then of course we brought in Mackay which seemed to just totally rip the club apart.

The last bit I agree with you on, as it seems quite common knowledge that relegation clauses had not been written into any of the contracts of players signed post-relegation from the PL – and after all, why would they, as the club expected to bounce back pretty much straight away.

However, are you not aware that generally if a player is sold without formally requesting a transfer, then they are entitled to a loyalty payment? It was one of the reasons why Spurs played hard ball with Bale, and Liverpool did likewise with Sterling.

Do you not find it surprising therefore that, despite relegation, not a single Latics player formally requested a transfer? The likes of Carson, Perch, McLean were all sold to other clubs, yet “apparently” they were happy to stay and play for Wigan this season!

Personally i am not keen on this word “decline”. A decline is if the likes of liverpool, man utd etc fell from the premier league into league 1or 2, coupled with a decrease in attendances. What WE (we meaning WAFC – a small town lancashire club) have had is a set back. Lots of teams have them, teams a lot bigger than ours & some teams take years to get back. We have had a bad two years, but i am confident this team can get us back, not to where some might say we belong, but back to putting a smile on our faces.

I wonder if Saint Bob had stayed would he have done any better than Coyle or Rosler in the situation they picked up? Could he have got us out of the position Malky inherited?

Steve Bruce’s second season with us was our most comfortable season in the prem I think Standish. We were safe with a few games to go if I remember rightly.

We finished 11th I think but I think he’s probably referring to the fact that we were chasing Europe until we ripped the squad apart in January.

Yep, safe as houses, Bruce admitted after Christmas his biggest problem was motivating them cos they knew we were safe. Why play the Martinez way in div 1 when we could play the Jewell/Bruce way?

                        I meant exactly that.

We were comfortable until January, until Heskey and Palacios were sold and Zaki went AWOL. We only won another three games from then until the end of the season – which was relegation form – and by that stage, Bruce had also seemingly thrown the towel in and was looking elsewhere.
