Or he could have been seeing ££££s in his eyes. Indeed that probably was the turning point for Latics as far as pushing up the league but also the point that Whelan realised that to push on much further was going to hurt his pocket severely. Even more of Bruce’s side were to leave before the start of the next season.
Seems we have always lost players to balance the books. The biggest worry now is there is not much left to sell.

It probably was around then that Whelan saw there was a fine line between ambition and financial stupidity.

We don’t have the overinflated wage bill that we used to have in the Premier League and we operate under a stricter financial model these days, so I’m confident we don’t have to sell as much to balance the books.

I’d say that we don’t need to do at all now that the big Championship earners have gone.

Would be interesting to see what happens if we do get promoted. Would we throw money at the division or try and go up ‘on the cheap’?

Let us hope so as we can see how the crowds have dropped but some of us are still in awe of the crowds we have now in comparison to others in the lower two leagues. A big crowd for Dale in the Dale v Bury FA Cup Derby was the sort of crowd we would have looked forward to once but now we dwarf that. It just shows how far we have come. Let us hope for a win on Saturday to get us back on track.
Hopefully we never need to sell again but for the right money we probably will have to at sometime.

There is of course the middle model that we seem to have adopted.

At home most of us don’t buy top shop prices for food to keep up with the neighbours, but equally we don’t have to buy Smart Price.

Wigan Athletic are a very financially soundly managed club. The team have all sorts of analysts looking at performance, styles of play, options etc on the field. I fully expect that off the field the top of the shop have financial models in place that will calculate how much can be spent on various aspects without things ever becoming a problem. There will be all sorts of models for player wages, transfer fees in/out, sponsorship, sales, matchday revenue etc etc.

There are a number of rogue owners of other clubs out there that don’t do this, and end up in problems as they solely gamble and speculate. David Sharpe (with whatever guidance he needs from DW), Jonathan Jackson, and I suspect a variety of un-named financial support people seem to know what they are doing.
