I just don’t see what all the fuss is about with Baines, he’s average at best…ok hes pretty good going forward but he can’t defend to save his life and he gets a lot of help of Pienaar.
Love or hate Ashley Cole he’s the one world class player we have win the England team that seems to perform consistently.
7 October 2012 at 9:37 pm #94682Average my arse .Top defender and good at going forward.Baines for me over Cole.Good luck to the lad and he is a decent guy off the pitch also.had the pleasure of a chat with the guy in a Liverpool coffee shop a few weeks ago.He will be one of Fergies men next year ;)

People seem to forget how good Cole is and has been for a long time now.
Sentiment aside obviously.

Absolutely this. I love what Leights did for us but he’s not even in the same league as Cole.

I had a feeling you would latch on to this exact thread!
Baines has been statistically better than cole for the past 3 seasons.
And this season he is without a doubt one of the top performers in the PL.
I dont care how many medals Cole has got, that is all in the past.
Baines is the here and now LB and if he is not a shoe in for the England team based on his current form then I would seriosuly question the selection process for England. The “professionals” in and around the England set up are constantly bemoaning a lack of prospect of young players coming into the team yet when players like Zaha at tin pot clubs like Crystal Palace will never get a look in you can see where that problem comes from ;)

These comments make me laugh. You were saying the opposite when we discussed the matter in the Sauna at Swinton Leisure Centre earlier in the week.

WELL DONE BAINSEY………..
12 October 2012 at 8:57 pm #94912WELL DONE BAINSEY………..Hopefully he is not in the team on the basis Cole will assume the position come the Poland game.
Horrible person and a massively over rated player.

Cole will be back in the team because he is by far the better player
And has probably been are most consistent performer for a number of years now
I too can’t stand Cole either as a person….but I’d like to think the decision will be down to football

From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!14 October 2012 at 7:22 pm #94941Anonymous
Cole is 31. If we want to have any chance of putting together a squad that is used to playing with each other (pardon the expression) and capable of winning things in the future, we have to start putting out teams of players in the 20’s only now. There is not a great deal to choice between in terms of quality in Leighton Baines and Ashley Cole. One of them is about 5 years younger. How is there any sort of contest when choosing who to pick? Oh wait, yeah, one of the plays for Everton…

Seriously though what do you class as being “down to football”?
I would say that is based on club form of which Baines is by far the more in form player to date.
