They locked the gates and there were thousands who couldn’t get in to the ground.I remember at the time estimates of 25000 plus Wiganers had turned out for the game .Maybe we should contact a certain national talk station and give them this statistic next time they start droning on about “rugby town” and poor attendances.

Was only a kid so didn’t go, but apparently we had 20,000 there that day, still to this day one of the biggest away followings Goodison’s ever seen.
