On this day in 1997, Latics were defeated 1-0 at Brighton and Hove Albion, they seemed to have the gods with them that day as an on fire Wigan could not score, even with the golden boot winner for that season Graeme Jones having a host of chances.
In what was the final season for Brighton at the Goldstone Ground, 8,701 fans saw what was to be the start of a revival for Brighton which eventually saw them safe by the skin of their teeth after a two point deduction and we still went on to win the league.
Remember that game, we were already up, they’d gone down and on the coach going down, everybody to a man knew we would lose and it didnt matter.
Unusual season in that we won the league and yet managed to lose to the bottom 4, don;t think that will have happened too many times
Sorry Abram i think your stats are wrong. Both Exeter and Torquay finished in the bottom four and we beat them both home and away. Did you mean bottom two Brighton and Hereford ;)
p.s Brighton didnt go down either
Apart from Brighton and Hereford, I knew we’d lost to Darlington, Doncaster and Scarborough that season and was convinced that the bottom 4 teams came from those 5…..obviously completely wrong!
