Going to be hard one. Loanees won’t be playing (another reason for not having them). Bury players will actually know each other and played together before. No doubt Caldwell will be using the game to give his journeymen some game time (what should have been done in a proper pre season) but I guess on a well earned nil-nil draw after ninety minutes or a two nil to Bury. But it will just be a practice run out that nobody is worried about apart from 30,000 or so people who went to Cardiff.
11 August 2015 at 5:41 am #14388030,000? Behave – the whole attendance was 67,000 and we were playing United.

14,000 pre-season friendlies with 13,500 of them at home.
11 August 2015 at 3:13 pm #143890How about a dozen games spread amongst a squad of over 25 giving players match time.
11 August 2015 at 3:16 pm #143891How about a dozen games spread amongst a squad of over 25 giving players match time.Players have had match time. Find me a player in our squad that hasn’t featured in pre-season aside from those either injured or signed in the last week.
11 August 2015 at 3:23 pm #143893Jesus egg Mon its not like thugby. Six months in the pub then out on the pitch punching the shit out of an opponent. Our side this season will be lucky if they have played 100 minutes apiece pre season.

I take it you can’t find anyone?
11 August 2015 at 4:09 pm #143898How about a dozen games spread amongst a squad of over 25 giving players match time.Virtually every club from League Two to Premier League plays 5 or 6 pre-season games.
Wigan have played 5 in front of paying sypporters, and 2 during their training camp in Spain.
So they’ve done exactly the same as everyone else.
11 August 2015 at 4:29 pm #143900I would imagine approximately half the team that played on Saturday didn’t go to Spain and only joined up at some point in Scotland, wheras the likes of Waghorn & Tavernier did go and got their season off to a flyer at a different club.
We did too much chopping and changing pre-season, for our pre-season to be anything like effective enough on the first week of the season proper, no matter when it started and how many matches were played. It really is that simple.

You’re most probably right, but that’s down to the amount of incoming and outgoing transfers and the time it took to finalise these transfers rather than a poorly planned pre-season schedule – which is what Donny is suggesting.
11 August 2015 at 5:39 pm #143906Agreed Standish
11 August 2015 at 6:41 pm #143909Pre season did have a plan and 5/7 matches is fine for a squad of eighteen or so but for the amount of players there are in a squad these days and all the new faces 5/7 is not enough. Again this is a problem brought on by not having a traditional first team and reserve team. With that plenty match time prep was given.
