He has been training with the Latics to ensure his fitness is right. Now after playing in the club’s 3-1 victory over Dundee United, Stephen Caldwell is being linked with a move to the club.
Steven, brother of Gary, was released by Burnley at the end of last season and has been without a club since. Now, the Scotland international is said to be interesting Martinez after impressing during his time with the Latics.Of his interest, Martinez said: “Steven is trying to get his full fitness back and he hasn`t played a lot of football this year.
“He had a couple of niggles and needs to play football to get his intensity back. You could see how much Steven enjoyed the run-out. He is a talker and a leader and there are not many of his type around.
“We will speak to Steven, and obviously these things boil down to a few things such as numbers. We need to carry on assessing Steven”
He got a chance to play against Dundee during the weekend and from what I heard on Latics players he really didn’t put a foot wrong in the game and replaced Gohouri, I think we should give him a go simply because he can provide back up…

What a journey!10 August 2010 at 2:36 am #41926Didn’t we get Alcaraz on a free? :shock:Aye. Out of contract. He looks like he can be a cracking player for us.
Some players are still out there without clubs, including one called Marko Pantelic who is a Serbian international striker. He’s had a good scoring record and got 16 in 23 games for Ajax last season. They offered him a one year deal (he’s 31) but he wanted 2. I saw him a couple of seasons ago for Hertha Berlin, and he was class. Maybe a player like this, on the right deal for us, would be a good signing? (as a squad addition)
Steven Caldwell might be an alright addition.
