It is my opinion, not idiotic or ill informed if you consider the history and size of your club. My point is getting at, i would rather better supported, traditional teams graced the premier league like the sheffield clubs. Wigan is and always will be a traditional rugby town which can be seen by the attendances on a friday night to a rugby union game compared to a saturday afternoon premier league game. I think you brought 250 to the sol, a couple of hours up the road on a weekend. We had 3500-4000 at the dw on a stormy tuesday night in the middle of winter. Its great for the odd season to have a blackpool ( who have more history and support than you by the way) grace the premier league. But there is nothing about your club that suggests anything other than survival is all you set out to achieve, Which by the way i said in my previous post i think you will do again this season. But is that enough for a supposedly established premier league team who have had several seasons in the top flight. Surely top 12 should be an aim by now.

First point there is no way you brought any where near 4000, a good turn out but lets not exaggerate. We have no real history so our fan base is building now whereas you have been a big club. And you must have a short memory because remember Roker Park what was your crowd average there??? Also we have no debts compared to your team who I would imagine are massively in debt. And guess what for all the money you have spent you will never get in Europe and will probably never win anything.

Two points which make you, I’m afraid, look rather silly.

        1. It’s rugby league, not rugby union, and
        2. Have you actually looked at comparative attendances? No, I thought not.

Quite simply Bobby got it wrong by changing the team. Diame and Moses should have started along with Sammon. This is the team that has more than held its own the last few weeks and though Hugo may be more dangerous than Connor he is less of a team player. He fails to hold the ball up or involve others and constantly loses possession easily meaning when he is dispossessed the other team can break quickly. Hugo cant play up front on his own so why do we keep trying the same losing formula. When Sammon has started we have started to look like a team. Sadly, as he doesnt know his first 11 we could soon be back to square one.

The referee may have been bad but the standard of some of that defending was some of the worst i have seen. The goal where Figueroa left his man to claim a foul defies the fact that he is a decent defender. God help us against City!

rugby league/union its all the same to me, its a sport not widely followed in these parts.

We are currently below our neighbours up the road who in recent times have been more successful than us in terms of league position. They havent won a trophy for a lot longer than us though i might add.

Our attendances at roker park would average 25k during the 90’s. Prior to that there would be 40-50k in the ground before safety measures were introduced following the horrible hilsborough disaster.Decent turn out considering our neighbours were sat second in the league at the time and a lot of young un’s in the middle grounds chose newcastle because of this.

Also, Our debts are a loan from the chairman which he will only want repaying upon sale of the club. We have actually recovered more in transfer fees and our wage bill has reduced dramatically so we are in a healthy position for the financial fair play rules coming in.

As for not qualifying for europe, 4 weeks ago i would have said we had no chance but with the new manager and never say die spirit i think MON will have a real go for this next season, because due to the mess bruce left us in i think theres too many points to claw back this season to do this.

I come on here with the intention of trying to be neutral and complimentary of your performance last night. The other comments are opinions which i hope you dont take to heart, just feel that you have done amazing going through all the divisions and stopping up season in and season out but theres nothing more you offer to the league. sorry just my opinion!

Then don’t pontificate about things you freely admit to not understanding.

I see you wrote a lot in your post but I didn’t get past the bit on the quote above. That’s the second time tonight I’ve only read about 5% of what you have to say. You could save yourself some effort, mate.

SAFC you are talking utter cr@p saying Wigan is a rugby town!
Do your homework rather than listening to west ham goons on talksport.
We are in the PL on merit and have been since 2005 thats the point mate!!!
Unlike Blunderland we are in THE football hotbed(6 rival EPL clubs within a 20 mile radius) not a false media created one like the one you have in the north east-2 clubs you both should be gettin 90000 a game shouldnt you?

            #76974

i wasnt been pompus simply stating that i dont follow either form of egg chasing so rugby union or league is not important to me. My point was simply that wigan is a known rugby town.

I’ve said it once on here and I’ll say it again. I have watched Sunderland on tv against Blackburn and City and once live at the DW. A big well done to “MON” but you have got mullered in all 3 games deserving no points yet getting 9. Its a results business and fans love to see their team win, but the real football fans know if their team has performed win draw or lose. If you think that Sunderland have become a team challenging for Europe [thats what some of the pr-icks were saying on talkshyte last night], then you are as deluded as yon barcode men who think they are challenging for similar honours.

Whilst listening to your “1800” traveling supporters last night singing premier league your having a laugh, I can only presume that they had forgotten 2 things,

              1) We are one of the few teams who have never been relegated from the EPL.

              2) We took all 3 points from the SOL just over a month ago and probably got your last manager sacked.

Now first of all…..if not widely followed in your parts then why use an “egg chasing” analogy (as stated in a later post) – one normally reserved/used here in Wigan. Further, your second point about recovering more in transfer fees etc is pure fabrication……

according to this (Link) Sunderland spent(between 2006 and 2011) –

                £146.9 million

and received (in that time) –

                £84.25 million

Call me old fashioned…but that’s a loss of about £63 million (ish).

Now then a real fan would have known that already;………………….. a troll however…. ;)

And what exactly do you offer to the league? Not exactly up there challenging for trophies are you? For a ‘big’ team with so much support and history you seem pretty average to me with a penchant for turning on the manager quite quickly when you perceive things aren’t going right. The bottom line here is that none of us are ever going to be up there. The difference is that we know it – many other teams don’t seem to.

a good turn out but lets not exaggerate.

Unlike WAFC who announced a 15,000+ crowd for the game. I thought it looked sparce from my view in the North Stand, but watching the re-run on TV showed the Boston stand to be less full than normal – I would guess everyone in the West could have fitted in there, and those in the south could have probably squeezed in too.

That means there were 11,000 tops (less depending on whether you think Sunderland brought 1800 or 3500 (I’d say about 2,700 personally). I’m guessing the 5,000 freebies (South stand was almost full according to the ticket purchasing page) chose to stay at home due to the weather.

A Wigan RL supporter accusing Latics of diddling their crowd figures upwards??
What possible benefit could Wigan Athletic get from doing that?? On the other hand if they had to prove that they only spent a certain percentage of their income on salaries then I could understand them diddling the gate figures ;)

                  #76992

As for SAFC247 – unfortunately the criteria for getting promoted & continuing to play in the top flight isn’t who you think is fit to “grace” the division
Last time I checked it was down to gaining enough points to get promoted from the division below & getting enough points to stay there. Something which in the 6 seasons Latics have been in the top flight they have managed better than Sunderland in 4 of them. How that must smart!!!
Counter to your claim that Sunderland had an average of 25k in the 1990’s – in the 10 years prior to leaving Roker park your club never got close to that figure as an average. Go back even further & in the previous 30 years they only managed to breach that figure 9 times so you don’t need me to tell you the average over that period wasn’t 25k either.
As for 40k-50k in the ground prior to the safety measures introduced after Hillsborough. Well that was in 1989 & you average that season was 14878 & between the end of WWII & leaving Roker park you topped 40k as an average 8 times in 50 years
Nice to see you don’t let the truth get in the way of a good yarn!!!

As I said, the ticket page for the South stand showed “Limited Availability”, with less than 200 tickets in the whole of the area. Are you seriously telling me that there were 5000 in that stand? :silly:

It was the same story for the Boston Stand, where the 4 centre blocks all had less than 100 seats in (out of 940). Again, the TV footage clearly shows half-full centre blocks.

Announcing a crowd which includes 5000 FREE tickets sounds a lot better than announcing what was potentially their lowest ever Premier League Crowd.

And of course the tax due to HMRC on 5000 FREE tickets = £0.00. ;)

Hope that clears it up for you!

Considering you admit to rarely attending football matches at the stadium, what on earth do you base your estimate on?

11,000? Not a cat in hell’s chance. If it was around the 11,000 mark you could tell it a mile off – like on Carling Cup nights.

There are around 11,000 season ticket holders for starters – so are you saying a couple of thousand of them didn’t bother turning up, and there were no additional supporters in there?

Also, the 5,000 ‘freebie’ tickets you talk about isn’t 5,000, it’s 2,000, and the tickets are given out on a request basis – ie. they are not given out as a job lot, and are provided on a request basis. If the ‘requester’ doesn’t use their tickets, they’re never given them again. So this belief of 5,000 tickets being doled out and unused is a total myth.

So let’s get this right….you used to watch Wigan Athletic on a regular basis, but stopped supporting them a few years ago, and on Tuesday you were in the away end supporting the opposition?

So, while we’re at it, if all is not going well at work, are you likely to adopt the wearing of salwar kameez and a turban whilst shouting ‘death to the infidels’?

You are either the most fickle of the fickle, or you have been talking out of your arris.
