I can’t believe the amount of rubbish written on this board by some of our so called fans.
Calling for Bobby’s head, slagging off Whelan, longing for a return to the Championship! Utter garbage. What planet do you people live on?
Do you not remember the days when we were languishing in football’s bottom tier?
Some of our fans are seriously deluded. We are Wigan. We are a small club who have risen from nowhere to be rubbing shoulders with the big boys in the best league in world football. Our crowds are rubbish and we have a rubbish pitch. But we are in a position most club’s long for.
This is our third relegation scrap and we are yet again punching above our weight. Yes we’re not playing champagne football, but for goodness sake can’t we ALL get behind the manager, the team, the chairman and everyone else at the club.
I don’t want to go down to the Championship as I for one doubt we would ever make it back.
We will stay up, things ARE going to improve and we will start with a win at Birmingham on Saturday. Birmingham has been a lucky city for us so far this season!
We have enough talent in our team to win football matches. I would argue that we have better attacking talent than most clubs down the bottom and to add to that, we have young promising players in midfield such as McCarthy and Diame plus Moses.
Our defence looks a lot more solid with Caldwell at the back and if we can get Boyce in at right back instead of Mario we’ll do okay.
Let’s have some positivity from everyone and get behind the lads!
22 February 2010 at 6:19 pm #23792all i ask for is effort from the players, and thats not happening so we need another manager who demands effort from the players
22 February 2010 at 6:28 pm #23794all i ask for is effort from the players, and thats not happening so we need another manager who demands effort from the playersdont know if you are one of the boo brigade, but by booing the team and management do really think that will give them any sort of lift to put the effort in :!: i will get a few lads together and every time you drop a clanger at work or your not having a good day we will stand there booing you to see if your work improves, all it is doing is undermineing any confidence left in the team
22 February 2010 at 6:30 pm #23795I don’t think a lack of effort is the problem at the moment, more a lack of confidence.
There were times yesterday when we should have played the ball quicker upfield, but we played the easier pass instead to retain possession.
Our problem is that we don’t have a team who can play on our cabbage patch of a pitch. Under Bruce when we played more direct it worked a treat. Unfortunately we don’t have a Heskey anymore so bypassing the midfield to a big strong target man isn’t going to work because we don’t have such a player.
Our style of play is far more suited to playing away from home, which is why we have a half decent away record. We will win on Saturday, just you wait and see.
Keep the faith

22 February 2010 at 6:43 pm #23798I don’t think you could describe Mr Scotland as a Heskey-type. For one, Heskey scores goals (well a few a season) and he is also good in the air, something our short stocky Mr Scotland is not so good at.

I think its a lack of ability on the part of the players & the manager
“Our style of play is far more suited to playing away from home, which is why we have a half decent away record”
Is it??? Then how come Latics have more points and a better goal difference at home than they do away??“We will win on Saturday”
I hope so I really do, but nowt I’ve seen so far this season gives me any reason to believe that they will22 February 2010 at 6:47 pm #23800I don’t think you could describe Mr Scotland as a Heskey-type. 22 February 2010 at 6:49 pm #23801Keeping it positive
I can’t believe that people are saying the pitch hasn’t affected us. Of course it has !!!! Before the Bolton game our problem wasn’t creating chances , we were making loads , it was that we just couldn’t finish them. Now suddenly in the last two games we aren’t creating any chances whatsoever. Our style of play needs a decent pitch , and our star player , Zog , especially needs a decent surface. There was one instance yesterday when he was on a run and Spurs didn’t have to tackle him because he simply grinded to a halt when the ball got stuck and he virtually overtook the ball.
Both teams resorted to a fair bit of long ball yesterday , the difference was that they had Crouch who either won the header and flicked it on for Defoe , or he chested it and held it up perfectly. We had Moreno , who was totally dominated by Dawson.
There’s enough quality and good results in this squad of players to keep us safe this season.
22 February 2010 at 6:57 pm #23803Tydlesley,
We have three wins away from home, as many as we have had at home, which in my book for a side scrapping for survival is a good record.
In fact it is the best total of away wins in the bottom half of the league.
I can’t understand doom and gloom merchants like you, only happy when you’re having a moan!
Look on the bright side, we could be Pompey!
I’m as disappointed as any Latics fan with the way our season has gone, but we’re not marooned in the bottom three and have EVERY chance of pulling away from the bottom.

….or falling into the relegation zone in the next couple of weeks, after getting beat at Birmingham, and at home to Liverpool.
I think the eternal optimists will have no excuse to use, in 2 or 3 weeks, time. Can you honestly not see that?
22 February 2010 at 7:07 pm #23808We’ll see in two weeks’ time won’t we.
But when we beat Birmingham on Saturday please come back on this board next Monday so I can see if I can turn your scepticism back into optimism!
22 February 2010 at 7:08 pm #23810I think the eternal optimists will have no excuse to use, in 2 or 3 weeks, time. Can you honestly not see that?Dave, nobody is making excuses. Some are just trying to remain positive.
For the 5 millionth time, that does not mean that those people think we are a match for Barcelona and if only we could get this pesky pitch relaid we’d qualify and win the champions legaue within the next two seasons.
It’s very easy to say “we’re shyte and will be definitely be relegated; mark my words” just so that if/when it happens you can all say “see, told you so”. What purpose does that serve?
22 February 2010 at 7:16 pm #23814“In fact it is the best total of away wins in the bottom half of the league.”
I take your point & I think only Stoke have got more points away from home in the bottom half than Latics but you did initially say our style is more suited to playing away from home than at the DW & I just pointed out that our points tally doesn’t indicate that
“I can’t understand doom and gloom merchants like you, only happy when you’re having a moan!”
I’m far from happy when I’m having a moan – that’s why I’m moaning!!! What I can’t understand are eternal optimists whose optimism seems to have no basis in reality“we’re not marooned in the bottom three and have EVERY chance of pulling away from the bottom”
True we not marooned in the bottom 3 but we’re only 2 points away and 1 league win in the best part of 3 months indicates we’re more likely to be sucked into the bottom 3 than to pull away from it
Bar a couple of what now look like freak good performances, all I’ve seen this season why I’ve caught Latics has been really, really poor stuff.
I’m not booing em coz I think they aren’t trying, I’m not booing them at all but what we have is a bunch of poor players and a manager who looks hopelessly out of his depth22 February 2010 at 7:19 pm #23815“What purpose does that serve?”
It serves just as much purpose as claiming “we won’t go down, give Bobby more time, he’ll come good” does
Boards like this give people any area to vent their spleen without taking it out on the players/management on match day & battering their confidence still further – though admittedly some do that too!! -
