I posted a week or so ago re all time Latics heroes and one name I remember but didn’t use was that of Tony McCloughglin. Only reason was the old memory was playing tricks and I couldn’t quite remember the event properly.
What happened was something like this. Tony retuned to play for Latics after a long suspension for playing as an unregistered player in junior league football in Liverpool. His comeback was against Darwen in either the Lancashire Junior Cup or Lancashire Floodlight Cup. A game memory thinks that Latics won 11-1 with Tony bagging 7 goals.
Are there any out there who could give the full acurate information about the match to put my mind at rest before I go further round the twist. I have had a look on line and havn’t found the match anywhere.
Many thanks.22 October 2015 at 1:30 pm #145437I’ve got full details in the book “The Latics” by Dean Hayes. You are correct in pretty well all details.
It was Lancashire FA Trophy 2nd Round on 1 February 1970 against Darwen, and Latics won 11-1.
Tony McLoughlin “was letting Darwen know just how great it was to be back, after three months suspension, by scoring seven of the goals”.
The Latics team was Reeves; Turnetr, Sutherland, Gillibrand, Coutts, Ross, Hill, Fielding, McLoughlin, Fleming, Breen
Darwen had Wallace; D Waddicor, Oldham, Cairns, Wright, M Waddicor, Conway, L Waddicor, Bell, Barrett, Hutchinson
Ref was N Hayes from Bolton, attendance 742.McLoughlin’s goals were in the 13th, 18th, 23rd, 50th, 58th, 64th and 90th minute and Jim Fleming (19 and 32), Mandy Hill (38 min penalty) and Johnny Fielding (65th) added the others – Bell scored Darwen’s only goal.
That OK? :)
22 October 2015 at 6:05 pm #14543910 goals in the first 65 minutes, and only one in the last 25 minutes, bloody rubbish Wigan, what were you playing at. May be we were 10-0 up and Darwen were threatening a comeback after making it 10-1, and we had to pack the defence.
23 October 2015 at 12:00 am #145444I have that book too George but it doesn’t tell you why he was suspended for three months.
It must have been something serious but do you know why?23 October 2015 at 4:30 am #145445Page 21, penultimate para, Sammy.
“…following a three month suspension after having been caught playing Sunday league football for an amateur side…”
Donnyspage got it all spot-on :)

Well done Donny, the little grey cells are still functioning okay afterall, but I bet you can’t remember what you had for your tea last night.23 October 2015 at 5:04 pm #145447Three free range eggs in an omlette Claude!!!
23 October 2015 at 5:07 pm #145448Missed the game for some reason but remember our Grandad telling us about it. So gutted at not seeing it. Saw 7 scored two matches on the trot I think against Goole Town and Matlock Town. May be wrong.

May be wrong.I think your spot on Donny but I seem to remember a 4-0 in between tho I may be wrong and something in the memory bank is saying that Gainsborough Trinity was the other team. I believe we set the NPL goal scoring record that season. I’m sure someone will find the correct stats but I don’t think you are far off the mark marrer.
