The computers show how many clicks through the turnstiles there are, then a small number is added on (both Warriors and Latics do it) to account for corporate etc. that come through the Reception doors.
Control of crowd numbers is a Stadium Security and Police matter.
25 March 2013 at 7:04 pm #106197Although I rose to the bait a few time previously these threads tend to get on my nerves. SDW just doesn’t know when to stop and it’s beyond tedious.
But there is an attendance discussion in the rl fans wigan forum that does put a bit of a slant on this. Pretty much everybody that contributed has admitted that the attendance was actually probably about the 8000 mark.
It just goes to show that all the fiddled attendance barbs that we get are pretty unjustified. I’d like to think it’ll put an end to them but I know it won’t.

As GL says above though the corporate would have been added to that and seeing as those on the top floor of the West stayed inside in the warm while those from other lounges filled say 70% of the corporate seats you’re probably not far off with 11k
25 March 2013 at 9:29 pm #106206Looked about 6000 from where I was watching.
(Was there a wedding on?)

I work at the stadium on match days for both clubs and on sat the only corporate open was riggoletos because their was 2 wedding on at the stadium 1 in tbe marquee the other in the main corporate room in the west stand.

the weddings could have waited an extra week and had a re-union seeing as they play saints again like last time
25 March 2013 at 11:27 pm #106218Just to clarify. I used to work for the stadium too, and have on a few occasions worked in the control room – next to the gate computer. Although a warm job, I didn’t enjoy it – preferred to be out among the fans and not being in radio contact with stewards dealing with “issues”. Too much like hard work for me :)
How it worked was that the computer shows a figure for gate “clicks”. It’s in real time as security and police need to be able to monitor any hotspots. Not likely at Latics, we know, but after Hillsbrough everything has to be “just so”.
When all are in the ground, the computer will show, for example, 11,548. Someone in the control room will then estimate the extras. On a couple of occasions I actually did it. “Come on, George, give us the attendance figure”. Because this is a security and police matter it has to be realistic. The police have to report what the crowd is to their superiors, and wild misrepresentations would not be acceptable. So with that figure you’d probably say something like “11,814”. That becomes the official figure.
A representative of whichever club used to come at half time (for Latics it was Brenda) and asked US what the crowd was. They had no say in determining the figure, and equally no account was taken of club politics.
Hopefully that explains how it was done. Crowd figures are as near as dammit accurate.
26 March 2013 at 6:40 pm #106277now i get thats why wurriors crowds register more than are actually in attendance
one click per person works fine at football matches
but at rugby there is another factor taken into account but never mentioned
rugby fans being of the lets try to be polite here
over weight greasy smellyy kind
will actually make it click more than once while the length and width of the belly passes through -
