To dictate the pace and course of a game, a player has to be blessed with awesome qualities. “Those who have accomplished it on a regular basis can be counted on the fingers of one hand – Pele, Maradona, Best, Di Stefano, and Tom Finney.
My dad used to say he was the best he had ever seen and many others lucky enough to have seen him play have said the same .
The late Bill Shankly used to present a show on one of the merseyside radio stations in the 70s and the producer would quietly tell guests not to mention Finney as Bill would not stop talking about his ‘idol such was his awe of him.
incredible that he only received £14 a week for his unbelievable skills and had to do plumbing to top up his income- incredible and a travesty when you consider some of the absolute wasters who play the game today!
rest in peace
The man was an absolute legend and a gentleman. (Wayne who?) he used to be my dad’s hero in the 50’s when he went to watch PNE with one of my uncles. Wouldn’t like to think what he made of today’s “stars” RIP Sir Tom…among the greatest!!!!
