Anyone see Man Utd this afternoon and notice the ridiculous tactics Fergie used?

Every time they had a free kick or a corner, he has them putting the ball in the box and trying to create a goal scoring opportunity. Pathetic. After 20 years in top flight management he should know better than that.

And that Martin O’Neill is just as bad. He had Sunderland doing the same thing yesterday.

I’m glad we don’t play that predictable rubbish.

You went round the houses to make a simple point there Brummie…

But I do believe we have the worst set of corner takers in the PL.

Wasn’t making a point about the quality of our corner takers. I’m pretty sure they can cross a ball as well as any other team given ‘permission’.

But if you take a short corner, or a short free kick in the last third, play it back along the line, then back to the last defender on the half way line, then inevitably back to Ali, I’m fairly confident the Opta stats would show you score fewer goals than if you actually put the ball into the opposing teams penalty area (as most/all teams do 90% of the time).

Or are we relying on Figgy to get us out of the sh*t by scoring a bag-full from his own half, starting this Tuesday when he’s back at The Britannia?

        Given permission :silly:

The quality of our crosses from corners IMO is sh*t which has naff all to do with Roberto just the long list of corner takers we have who for whatever reason cannot direct it into the box half the time.

You make it sound like we take short corners all the time?

There were a couple that didn’t come off against Sunderland I admit but I bet you were not complaining when Maloney scored against Man Utd from one were you?

I wasn’t very impressed in the final minute of added time at the end of the first half yesterday when Stam took a short one and it ended up back on the half way line when the ref blew, with Caldwell, Boyce and Di Santo all in the area waiting for a cross.

Don’t get me started on Stam the lad couldn’t cross his legs.

Except for our first goal when he played the percentage game and just put it into the box.

I’m not saying we should be the new Notlob (or Wet Spam) but we do seem to be overdoing the Barcelona tactics at the moment. It’s not August anymore…

I get your point Brummie, it boils down to the manager telling the team how to play. That includes having more of a purpose up front, ie, more balls into the box and shoot on sight..

He didn’t put it into the box he was in the box and that was an embarrassing attempt at a shot that pea rolled towards the goal only for Vaughan to help it in.

I would bet my left testicle Roberto tells his players nothing even remotely like don’t put balls into the box or shoot when an opportunity presents itself.

Balls into the box are a big part of the 3-4-3 (or whatever hybrid at the time) system we play.

Look at the back end of last season and the amount of crosses Beausajor and Boyce were putting in to the danger area.

The problem is that with our CB’s injured it means Boyce in the centre and Stam at RWB who for some reason seems to fluff every cross he gets the opportunity to put in after doing really well to put himself in a position to do so!

This coupled with Beausajor’s unfortunate spell of poor form has resulted in our crosses from our WB positions becoming non existent.

If we dont get another CB or RWB in during the transfer window I can see us going to a back four in the near future.

The sad thing is that the little I seen of Miyachi at Bolton was that he can put a decent ball into the box.

I understand, but it’s Bob who picks the side & tac tics. Stam gets blamed for a lot but why does Bob still pick him then? He seems reluctant to try other players even when we have injuries.
Personally, I would have put Golobart in at CB & put Boyce at RWB.

I don’t see Bob urging them forward on the side line when we are going backwards from a corner. He seems to accept it which tells me that it is his preferred way! Possession footy is ok if you are creating chances!

And to pick you up on your earlier comment about Stams poor cross into the box for our first goal… See what can happen against a poor team when you throw a ball into the box…. I’d happily take more scruffy goals if it meant picking up three points

                ?

I said before that was not a cross into the box it came to him he f***ed his shot up and we were lucky Vaughan put it in.

I am all for more crosses into the box and like I said it was a big part of the success last season I just don’t think you can completely blame Roberto for the lack of crosses as sometimes circumstances do dictate.

I Like Golobart a lot and I could say just as easy as you throw him in.

But Roberto sees him day in day out and I assume has decided he is not ripe to be going up against one of the most in form strikers in the PL if not the world.

People slag Martinez off for not throwing players in at the deep end but in all fairness they seem all the better for it when they do get in the team.

With Boyce getting on and Stam imo not being up to scratch I think a decent RB/RWB will be top priority come summer.

Unfortunately I think we will have to make do for the rest of the season :(

I think Bobby’s mantra is to always keep possession. So unless it’s almost a nailed on goal, pull back, and pass back, and keep the ball.

We rarely play the percentage attacking option of having a go. When Stam did yesterday, we scored. We won’t always score, just like we won’t always not score if we choose the possession option. It just seems that currently we don’t have a go, get it into the box, and scrap, very often. Playing pure football in August is one thing when there’s still over 30 games left. In January, it’s sometimes right to play a bit more directly and mix it up a bit when you have the chance.

We need to get the balance right.
