      The Doctors Ill

      Monday 26th July

The morning began with a rather unfortunate incident on the way to Llubjana Station. A hostile gang of local taxi drivers were outraged when my travel bag brushed up against one of their jallopies and damaged some of the paintwork. Unable to run very fast with baggage we were soon surrounded and hounded by a baying group of Slovenians demanding anything up to 200 Euros in repairs. The Doctors hasty intervention averted a full scale altercation. Eventually we had to part with 40 Euros for the incident and we made a sharp exit towards the station.

After a scenic train journey crossig the border to Austria we arrived at our base for the next 5 days. At around 2 we boarded the bus to Bad Bleiberg for the game against NK Rudar Velenje. We arrived at a deserted ground high up in the mountains 3 hours before kick off at 18.00 and made our way to our favourite (only) hostelry directly behind the ground and reacquainted ourselves with the bar staff from last years visit. Photographs were taken, pleasantries exchanged, beer was consumed and the inaugrual Bad Bleiberg Latics Crazy Golf Tournament commenced. After a stunning start with a hole in 1 on the first hole it was all downhill for myself and Pauletta from here on in. The Doctor aided by several large beers made a blistering start and maintained consistency throughout. It soon became obvious it was a 2 horse race between Nicholas and the Doctor. The drama continued until the final hole when Nicholas held his nerve to claim a sensational late victory and is already looking forward to defending his title next year. After a few more beers we headed next door to the ground.

Arriving at the ground we looked round to see how many other Latics fans were in attendance. However, it became clear there would be only four of us as usual. Isnt it a shame that no other fans attempt to find one of the most scenic and picturesque grounds in the world!!! We found the bar and the Doctor put up his flag. Several more beers were consumed.

The game set off at a frantic pace with 2 goals being scored within the first 10 minutes. Jordi Gomez headed in the first from a Diame cross. James McCarthy added a second a following an assist from Victor Moses. More beers were consumed and tales exchanged with the locals and before we knew it the score was 3-1 to Latics and half time courtesy of a Jason Scotland penalty. The first cries of “Scotland scored my Lord” for the season echoed around the hills and valleys of rural Austria. Latics started the second half with new signing James McCarthur slotting in to the holding midfield role and Latics comfortably controlled the remainder of the game. A penalty from Boselli meant the final score was 4-1 in Latics favour, Attendance was in the region of 200.

After the game we enjoyed the hospitality of several local supporters who we had seen in previous years and as the beer flowed and the light faded the singing commenced. We were joined by the referee and linesman who also joined in the festivities and drank several pints. Nicholas against his better judgement downed several funny colured shots courtesy of our Austrain hosts and as a result is feeling somewhat unwell this morning. He also resorted to calling the ref and linesman as they were plying him with drinks, and arranging for them to come to the game on Thursday as Wigan supporters.

After the long half hour windy lift back into town by two local supporters, two of our party became very ill and projectile vomit was seen on the pavement all the way to the hotel (not the beers obviously but the driving). After a couple more beers we headed home and called it a night! More of the same against the Turks please on Thursday!
