Teetering on the verge of the sack at Chesterfield.
By all accounts, he’s lost the dressing room, and the supporters. Another defeat tomorrow at Colchester, quite probable, and he’s likely to be sacked.
Same old questions and complaints about his ways and tactics. Hasn’t learned it would seem.
12 September 2017 at 10:56 am #161881Look I am no big fan of his tactics. Just don’t like it but I admire Gary for sticking to what he believes in and I certainly wouldn’t gloat if he lost his job especially as an ex player, captain and manager of our club.
With the money and in the right place his principals can bring success but at an already struggling club with little money it was always going to be hard as demonstrated here with the difference between league one with money and the championship as a smaller fish. Good luck to the lad whatever happens.12 September 2017 at 12:45 pm #161882I’m with you Donny. I remember seeing his first game in charge at Fulham. Yes, sadly we lost (again) but it was one of the better games we played all season, and it was a pleasure to behold. He’s clearly learnt a lot off roberto, including his ‘inability’ to make a quick change of plan mid game. When that style works … it is wonderful, but when you’re found out ….. oh dear. I remember those long build ups which went from Boycee to Ali to Espi, to Ali, to Maloney to Ali to McCarthy back to ali who’d kick it out, then it’d all start again with Maloney gettign the ball who would fly down the wing through Crouch’s legs, give it to Hugo who would have 9 defenders to wade through. I think Gary would have been better to have stayed an assistant for a few more years.
12 September 2017 at 1:54 pm #161884He needs to grow some big sidies and get a pub!
12 September 2017 at 2:39 pm #161885From Chesterfield message board:
“when Caldwell was appointed we were in a relegation scrap with a realistic chance of staying up, he came in and tried wholesale footballing changes and treated it like a pre-season campaign to experiment, result we dropped like stone. ”
Yep. Sounds about right.12 September 2017 at 2:46 pm #16188612 September 2017 at 5:47 pm #161888Meanwhile in Oz :)Interesting read that garswood.
12 September 2017 at 9:40 pm #161890He’s clearly learnt a lot off roberto, including his ‘inability’ to make a quick change of plan mid game. When that style works … it is wonderful, but when you’re found out ….. oh dear.I’ll have to defend Caldwell from that comment.
One of the refreshing things for me about Caldwell during that Lge1 season, especially early doors when it wasn’t quite clicking, was that he was able to see that & make the changes necessary to turn it round – hence the comebacks (some successful, others not) against the likes of Chesterfield & Port Vale. There was also the Blackpool away game where he changed things round when they weren’t working & we scored 3 or 4 in the 2nd half.
He also had his idea at the start of that season that he wanted to play a certain formation but when that wasn’t working he adjusted it until he found one that worked consistently.
That said, what then became disappointing when we got to the Championship was that he seemed to lose that ability & our system became rigid & inflexible & he didn’t seem to know what to do to try & change things mid game. That did make me wonder whether he was taking on someone elses advice in the early days & once he’d had the success of the Lge1 title he thought he knew more than he did & stopped listening to that advice
12 September 2017 at 10:53 pm #161891Yeah, fair enough …. I’ll take that. Rumours are rumours but I heard he had several people whispering in his ear when we were in the Championship, poor guy. Another big plus ….. he didn’t wear shorts.
13 September 2017 at 11:59 am #161902Meanwhile in Oz :)Mr Potato Head also facing the fans backlash at Villa. Another couple of bad results and owd Spuddy could be out on his ear.
13 September 2017 at 1:33 pm #161903It won’t help that Barrow is his right hand man either! They’ll both be potted by November!
14 September 2017 at 2:02 pm #161911Something not right with him, is there? Seems that the rumours we had about goings on behind the scenes here were probably true as well. Hmmmmmm
