I am surprised it is still going. There were very few people in there the last time I went, which was a while ago.

It is quite mad as when I first started going out in the 80’s it was banging in there, with the cheapest ale for miles.

FA Cup Winners 2013, sounds good that

Goose Green LC, like many other similar clubs, is not alone in trying to draw people through its doors and stay afloat. These clubs, so popular in the 70’s and 80’s, are dying. They do not appeal to the under 40’s and once the current but ever dwindling generation has passed through it’s difficult to see how they can continue.

Goose Green LC held its 50th anniversary over the May Bank Holiday weekend and on the Saturday night hosted two old Wigan bands, Winston and Copper Kettle. It was great to see the club packed out again and a fond reminder of how things used to be.

The club is doing a repeat of that night on the 15th January so if you fancy a nostalgia trip get yourself down there and it give your support.

A bit of a plug for the night I must admit and a bit of self promotion!

Oh, and in response to the other posts, the lack of punters in these places is not restricted purely to Labour Clubs.

All clubs, and most pubs, are on their backsides. I have been told that Goose Green has really bad debts. Well, think about it. They struggle to get 200 people in most Saturday nights these days, and yet they pay £600+ to bands. It’s crazy.

People are not going out, and the people that are do not drink like they used to. They are sipping, rather than supping. The people that are staying in are using things like X factor as an excuse. I see it on Facebook every weekend, people saying they can’t wait for their night in with a takeaway and some supermarket bought drink. (Can you blame people really, when they can get 45 bottles for £20? No you can’t.)

But the great British social institutions are dying. Apart from the places such as King Street, with it’s chain places, and perhaps Hindley centre, everywhere else is really struggling.
One day, the people that are staying in will finally decide they fancy going to the pub. They will then find that to do so, means going into the town centre. Fine, they’ll do that. They’ll then find they have to pay to get in somewhere. Ok, not a problem. Then they’ll go up to the bar and order maybe, a pint of lager and a gin and tonic (I’m thinking a couple, here!) and the barperson will gladly oblige, before saying “That’ll be £9”, to the shock horror of the customer, who will no doubt say “£9? How come you are charging so much?”

“Because we can” will be the smirk-ridden reply.

Honestly, that’s the way it’s heading, folks. If these places get the monopoly on the drinkers, that’s what will happen. I have several friends who have recently got out of the licenced trade, simply as they have had no choice.

The majority of social clubs are operating well above their means at the moment. The problem being that a lot of them are being run by stubborn old blokes who really haven’t got a clue. When they are stood their scratching their heads when the boards are going up, wondering what went wrong, they’ll need to have a look at themselves.

Goose Green could well become an Indian restaurant within 5 years. Seriously. Or else a boarded up monstrosity.

Found out when I drove past earlier and saw the sign advertising the fact, that they have a special night of entertainment planned for New Years Eve……..

                  …’The John Martyn Sound’.

Oh how wonderful. I really don’t see the attraction. A 60-odd (at youngest) year old bloke belting out Shirley Bassey and Celine Dion songs, which are beyond his vocal capability. Oh don’t get me wrong, I bet in his younger days he was a decent ‘turn’. But personally when I saw them play a few months ago, I was disappointed, as I expected far more from everything I had heard about them. An old bloke being backed up by drummer and a keyboard player was not what I was expecting. I was expecting a full band, guitarist, etc. I’m sure they could do better songs than they were doing as well. I mean, Shirley Bassey and Celine Dion?

The problem with Goose Green and other clubs like them, is they get too stuck on certain things. Is it not ‘old hat’ now? And they wonder why they struggle to get people in. It will come back to haunt them, eventually.

People who pay to go in pubs (ala King St),are puddled in my book.

If they stayed away for a couple of weeks the robbin get pubs would soon drop all entrance charges and would be practically beggin punters to `come in` with all sorts of special offers!

Last time I paid to get in somewhere was in Bradford, about 6 years ago. Chicago Rock it was. It was “pay £12 and drink what you want”. Me and my mate got on the JD and cokes, then the Sambuca. That was sound. But as for paying to just get in somewhere…….nah.

True what I said earlier, eventually these places like King Street will end up with the monopoly on prices, and they’ll exploit it. £5 a pint and all that.

If they stayed away or a few weeks, those places will be shut the next time you visit.
