Found out when I drove past earlier and saw the sign advertising the fact, that they have a special night of entertainment planned for New Years Eve……..

      …’The John Martyn Sound’.

Oh how wonderful. I really don’t see the attraction. A 60-odd (at youngest) year old bloke belting out Shirley Bassey and Celine Dion songs, which are beyond his vocal capability. Oh don’t get me wrong, I bet in his younger days he was a decent ‘turn’. But personally when I saw them play a few months ago, I was disappointed, as I expected far more from everything I had heard about them. An old bloke being backed up by drummer and a keyboard player was not what I was expecting. I was expecting a full band, guitarist, etc. I’m sure they could do better songs than they were doing as well. I mean, Shirley Bassey and Celine Dion?

The problem with Goose Green and other clubs like them, is they get too stuck on certain things. Is it not ‘old hat’ now? And they wonder why they struggle to get people in. It will come back to haunt them, eventually.

John Martin has a big following in the 50 & 60 year old age group so as far as Goose Green LC is concerned he’s guaranteed to pack out the club that night.
Now I’m pretty sure JM doesn’t need the money and I’m guessing he’s doing it for fun and no doubt his ego, but to carry, say, a five-piece band around with him everytime he plays, which is not that often, is neither feasible nor practical. Having a live band like that would also require a sound engineer, so by the time you’ve split the money between six or seven people there won’t be much left. This may not be a problem for JM but I’m sure it would be for the rest of the band.

I agree these types of clubs are stuck in the past and are ‘old hat’ to the under 40’s generation. There are lots of good bands playing pubs with decent followings so it shouldn’t be too difficult to get them to play these types of venues now and again and try and pull in the younger crowd.

Well, he was on a few weeks back and they were bigging him up beforehand. I got told “It’ll be packed” so I went along for a look. Nope, there were 170 in, tops. He spent the first song turning around and lambasting his keyboard player to change the key. (Waving his hand up and down at him Had I been keyboard player I’d have played one handed, flicking V’s with the other one at the whispy-haired cnut. )
He then murdered Celine Dion’s “All By Myself” (He nearly was) and then did an obscure Shirley Bassey song.
After about 5 songs, he started to get people up out the ‘crowd’ singing, which is all fine and well, but if I were a club and an act did that when they were being paid about £500, I’d be like:

“Wow there! We’re paying YOU to sing, not the audience!”

No wonder clubs are dying, deary me. Perhaps it’s the management and committe’s that need changing.

He must be losing it then. Still, 170 isn’t bad for GGLC.

I used to work at Goose Green Labour Club about 14 years ago. Without doubt the biggest night was when the Gutter Band used to play on a Friday night. They used to have some fella who would play his guitar whilst attached to some sort of rotating circle. I forget the exact mechanism. Lots of ale fueled nights since my teen years.

Bet they’re not as popular now eh?

Griff did your uncle use to live at Hawkley?

Heard of that band, but don’t think they are still gigging.

@SAMMY- To be quite honest, it’s not him, it’s the songs that he’s doing. Strange choices for a bloke of his age, really. I couldn’t believe he even attempted that Celine Dion one. The response he gets is basically good….from the people that ‘hang off’ everything he does. I think they remember him from the Riverside days, and are longing to hold on to at least some ‘tradition’. But with what he’s doing, his best days are long gone.

I’m stunned that GGLC are booking him for NYE. You would’ve thought they could’ve booked better. Or maybe it’s all they can afford? This could be a further sign that they are struggling. He’s all pally with the committee, and I’ll bet he’s going at a reduced rate. Even so, I bet they’ll be paying him and his two backing musicians around £1000 at least.

Goose Green was once the top club in the local area, and for some miles. Not now. It’s no different to any other. Tired decor, and yesterdays dreams…..

Do you see what I mean, then? I’m assuming he did the Celine Dion/Shirley Bassey stuff?

It’s obvious that at one time, he was probably a decent act. I think if he chose better songs, and more suitable to his vocals, he’d come across better. Outside of his ‘circle of support’ I think people see him for what he is. Past it? I witnessed two blokes stood right at the back of GGLC and they looked at each other, raised their eyebrows, and then drunk their pints.

Concert secretaries in clubs, haven’t got a clue. When the men are their, boarding the club up, they’ll be there in tears asking “Where did it all go wrong?” £500+ a night on the likes of ‘The John Martyn Sound’ is where.

No mate, Pemberton. Might have been a bit before your time to be honest though, if you were there 14 years ago.

Aye could be, I think the Concert Secretary when I was there used to have two daughters who worked there as well, although I could be getting my wires well and truly crossed.

He had no children. First name was Gerry.

I can’t say I’ve heard him since his Riverside days. I assume he’s still doing the same routine, getting people up from the audience and taking the p!zz, and his “following” still find that entertaining. Not too sure why he would attempt a Celine Dion song though unless he’s been asked to.

If GGLC can’t get a decent crowd in on NYE, with or without JM, then it really is a poor show but I would guess there will be a fair few in that night.

Yes, the club has seen better days and is in need of a major makeover. You wouldn’t want to stand still on the carpets in there for any length of time, you might never walk again!
