7 August 2011 at 6:02 am #69598I presume you’re on about Pat Richards.
He was born in Liverpool, Sydney to parents who were born and raised in Dublin. His sister was also born in Dublin. He moved to Ireland when he was 3 and lived there for a while before heading back to Oz. He visits his family that still remain in Ireland on a regular basis and considers himself an Irish Australian.
He stated in an interview on Sky that one of his proudest moments was pulling on an Ireland shirt and representing the Country of his heritage in the World Cup.

Never mind Rodders, you’ll have another 9 months of a relegation scrap to occupy your mind from next weekend rather than obsessing about your sucessful, trophy-winning lodgers.

7 August 2011 at 4:02 pm #69617I swerved it because the Egg had already answered your question with a very detailed answer.
Strange how you didnt mention any of the nine players who either come from Wigan or have graduated through the youth system.
Now try this question.
How many Wigan-born or Wigan youth-team developed footballers will be featuring for the home side at the DW on Saturday?

Strange how you didnt mention any of the nine players who either come from Wigan or have graduated through the youth system. Now try this question. How many Wigan-born or Wigan youth-team developed footballers will be featuring for the home side at the DW on Saturday?that is not a fair comparison to make, thugby league is a regional game and draws 99.9% of its players from the regions it is played in, pick a team in wigan amateur football league and i think you may find that all its players come from the same area of wigan.
football is an international game with over 130 professional clubs in the uk alone – when you are in a league like the premiership the chances of a local youngster making it big time are very very low.
i will ask you this, name me a local wigan lad who has made it to the very top in football – either through latics or any other club in the north west, some of these clubs have the biggest scouting /youth networks in the world and they dont find many in the north west, let alone wigan.once again you eggies are clutching at straws to defend your little minority sport, yes you had 9 local players in your team yesterday but so did st helens, as will both leeds and castleford today, it just emphazises what a no mark sport you really are.
biggest game of the year in thugby league yesterday – relegated to BBC2, second fiddle to a friendly rugby union game and athletics, and not able to fill a 13k stadium less than 10 miles away for both clubs ——that just about sums you up.

8 August 2011 at 1:31 am #69668I think what you were trying to say was the answer to my question was….
None.
Zero.
Zip.
Feck all.Which is the same number who featured in 38 league matches last season.
And the Season before.
And the one before that.
And the one before that.Strange isnt it that the world’s most popular sport has not had a Wigan born or produced player feature since Leighton Baines upped sticks and signed for his home-town club.
Its been 7 years since you reached the premiership and 9 years since you reached the Championship. That means you are established as a “big” club. So where are the members of the youth team of 2003/4, 2004/5 etc? Were they all so crap that they were chinned off? How about the kids that would have signed youth forms in 2006 for a “Premier League” club – where are they?
Face it – Wigan is the “Lost City of the Incas” when it comes to developing home grown footballers.
8 August 2011 at 1:42 am #69669i will ask you this, name me a local wigan lad who has made it to the very top in football – either through latics or any other club in the north westGary Walsh.
