We’ve heard he doesn’t think he can take us back up.
We’ve heard he’s been given permission to talk to Everton.
But has he actually resigned? If no, then if he isn’t offered / doesn’t take the job and mo other offers come in then could he simply remain our manager as he’s still under contract?
If yes, then how can we demand compo if he’s voluntarily left the job?31 May 2013 at 12:47 am #115113You can never be sure what the situation might be and whether Whelan is telling the full story, which I suspect he’s not.
I can only assume Everton gave United permission to talk to Moyes, which means Everton must also have been on the look out for a new manager whilst the season was still in progress. If Whelan only gave Everton permission to speak to Martinez after he stated he was leaving then that’s one mightily brave decision by him. Of course I don’t think that was the case and believe he was sounded out and more or less given the nod by Everton. All this talk of there being other candidates is just a smoke screen to deflect from the fact that Everton made an illegal approach, assuming Whelan is being open and honest about it all, which I don’t doubt for one minute he is…… honest!
31 May 2013 at 1:18 am #115115As far as I understand it, Bobby remains manager of Wigan Athletic, but has told DW he wants to leave, DW will let him leave so long as he gets compensated for it, simples.

He has asked to speak to Everton which is not quite the same as asking to leave. May ultimately end up meaning the same thing.
I think there is still a good chance that Bob could be left high and dry here, because if he is going to stay, there is some serious back-tracking to be done by one 76-year old chairman before that could happen. It’s interesting that Roberto has said absolutely zip in public since this started. That gives him total deniability!

Bobby is going, all the wording in the media and statements from Whelan are designed to ensure we get £2m compensation. If he resigned and walked away we would probably get nothing for him.
Well done dave if you can get £2m for him.

There is a notable silence from both Martinez and the club regarding all of this.Whelan in speaking out of turn shocker!
31 May 2013 at 2:28 pm #115134what confused me a little was that in one sentence DW said “he’s on a rolling 12 month contract” and then “if any club wants to take Roberto then they will have to pay up his remaining year” …. errrr, no
as with most things DW comes out with, there is an element of truth, an element of “made up fact” and most times a bit of a dig at something or somebody ……
I’m a believer oh yes, but not of anything DW comes out with. :P
31 May 2013 at 3:37 pm #115143The clubs position is
Sounds like the club don’t even know what’s really going on. Clear as mud.

What the club is saying is, despite all the ramblings from Whelan, Martinez is still the manager of the club until such time as the club he has been allowed to talk to, presumably Everton, makes him an offer.
Sensible statement, following all the hullabaloo that has surrounded Whelan and his direct dealingsramblings with the media. Ed Jones must be tearing his hair out.
31 May 2013 at 5:58 pm #115154Re: Bob’s silence, the same thing happened last year. When it comes to his own future he plays his cards very very close to his chest. In some ways that’s the gent in him – he doesn’t fuel media speculation – but his silence also creates speculation and also makes you wonder if he really is in as strong a position as being made out.
Either way I think I’ve moved on already – not sure I’d want him to stay now apart from to keep our squad intact.
31 May 2013 at 6:33 pm #115156Totally understand Bob’s reasons for wanting to move on….at some point he has to take a step up in club which Everton would undoubtedly be. This just feels different to the last couple of seasons, think whatever happens at Goodison, we need to move on now, maybe it would be better if Bob left us now.
