There are sections of the East stand netted off for security when at Old Trafford (under the same police authority) tickets can be sold in batches of 1900 3000 and 5500 without the need for empty seats, netting etc.

If we ever had a huge home support couldn’t ever imagine the authorities allowing fans in the same stand without segregation even if the concourse areas where divided.You are right, if we sold every seat in the home sections but only 1000 were sold in the North Stand, the remaining 4400 seats would be left empty.
This is due to the Stadium design within the concourse not being segregated.
I am sure, if this was ever going to matter, and we were in a position to regularly sell out the home stands, the club would look into redesigning the North Stand concourses so segregation was possible.
I don’t think we really need to worry about it too much at the moment as we can’t fill two stands never mind the three we have available and part of a the fourth.

It was mentioned by someone that we have all the netting stuff at the end of the East Stand because of hooligans.
Next it was mentioned that Utd had their share of hooligans.
My comment was relating to the fact that both clubs come under the greater Manchester police authority yet Latics have mesh all along the end of a separate stand than where the away fans are housed but Utd do not have to do this despite supporters virtually sitting next to each other.Admitidly there was a tad of irony in how I put it but still thought it was easy to work out. Not that its at all important.
