Having two Latics debutants score in their first full starting lineup ?
Thought we were dead & buried at 3-0 down.
24 January 2026 at 7:36 pm #206724First game of season in August 1997…
Beat Wycombe 5-2.
Brendan O’Connell hat-trick and Scott Green scored. Think they were debutants. David Lee, also debut, may have scored the other.

Thats what being on the Autism spectrum does for you. I have an high I.Q. as well and just remember facts and things. It can be a burden sometimes. Mind never stops working.
I can remember things from years ago about games, but not so much recent years. I cannot reeber much at all between 2014 and 2017 do to health issues.

24 January 2026 at 9:34 pm #206730Great memory
Remember that game against Wycombe , slaughtered them on a glorious summer afternoon and gave the false impression of a fantastic season ahead.
after that an Struggling to remember anything more memorable that season than that other than 5500 travelling to Blackburn for the FA cup 3 rd.-

24 January 2026 at 9:37 pm #206732Just got back and Lowe needs to go. I won’t go into the finer details but 3-3 doesn’t paint over the sh*t show.
If it wasn’t for Tickle making 4 tremendous saves we’d have lost that 7-3

On the flip side if Tickle hadn’t fucked up and our defence stopped pissing about we could have won that game.
Schoolboy calamity football at times!
Fuck the EFL

No mate, I wasn’t. But thanks all the same.

Yes, I was there. John Deehan set us up very cautious and we went 4 nil down against a very decent Rovers side. Only when he put David Lee on and he ran them ragged, did we start to play. He might have put David Lowe on as well. We clawed 2 back and had them on the Ropes. After the game Roy Hodgson said “Wigan were never in the game”, which angered my dad and I as we thought he gave us no credit whatsoever. We were a league one team against a Premier League side who had won it 3 years previous. With long hindsight, he was probably right though. So even then we were criticising our manager for being too cautious!

I tell you what though, we’ll miss him when he’s sold next week for 350k to someone like West Brom or Sheffield United.
Our defence always seems to struggle to clear the ball. My own particular attitude about defending and ‘playing’ football is to get the ball upto the half way line before we start to attempt to pass it about. ‘Don’t mess about around your own area’. Its that simple. And if clearing a ball from your own box, get it out to the flanks, to avoid a Bolton goal situation.
I don’t know how our coaches and players get it so wrong. I was coaching these basics to 11 year olds a few years back!
25 January 2026 at 9:16 am #206739Tickles under the cosh because of the defense badly failing. That 3rd Doncaster goal was a Keystone Cop moment.
3-3 doesn’t paper over the cavern size cracks in the team. I’ll never boo our players, never have never will. Nor will I sing “He’s getting sacked in the morning” which I totally disagree with but I can fully understand the travelling fans frustration.

25 January 2026 at 10:42 am #206741Any supporter that takes the time and trouble to travel a 160 plus miles round trip deserves to be able to vent their feelings.
The players are making errors and my view is they are being sent out full of nerves based on his oh so serious management.
The late great Brian Clough used to send his players out relaxed with simple clear messages , our team is not relaxed , they look like frightened rabbits.
I was told many years ago in my own line of work to keep things simple and I have done ever since and always always relaxed .
Needs a winning run and a 3 – 4 game wins to remove the toxic feeling around the club and I am not sure that is going to happen.
Final note , when did we last score 3 goals in any game ?
25 January 2026 at 2:52 pm #206742My argument is asking players to do a job they’ve probably never done before and one is
Wingbacks
It takes a serious type of player the master the art of attack and defense and reading the game so as your not caught out.
Lowe relies on this 3 at the back which means they constantly get pulled left, right and centre due to wingbacks not defensively minded.
Asking Hungbo to defend ?, I’m sorry but it’s a step too far. So he puts Murray in and tbh he’s no better at defending.
This just puts pressure on the back 3 and low and behold we look wide open.
Moxon looked ok in the second half and Taylor’s goal out of nothing was superb. But, those goals should be putting us into a winning position not chasing Doncaster’s 3 goals.
Lowe for me needs a reality check, he can’t stick to a system when he doesn’t have the type of player to execute it.
It’s not happening for Lowe and he needs to go. I honestly cannot see Tickle staying, I’m in no doubt Danson will force the sale so Lowe can strengthen

25 January 2026 at 8:20 pm #206744I listen to a lot of podcasts, including Stick To Football.
A few weeks back, they were discussing the Wing Backs system. Amorim was being stubborn at United and wouldn’t change things.
Gary Neville said that as experienced a player he was, he couldnt have played as a wing back. He was so used to having a midfielder in front of him, normally Beckham, he would constantly be looking to pass the ball down the line. This is an England International who won over 80 caps, and played at the very top of the English game.
So what hope have we got with Fraser Murray and Joe Hungbo?
Amorim lost his job through blind stubbornness. The same should happen to Lowe. We’ve finally landed a Scouse manager who doesn’t play the Scouse way. Yet in private, he will laud the great Liverpool teams of the 80s and early 90s who were driven to play a game of pass and move by suchlikes as Kenny Dalglish and Ronnie Moran. Its simple. Pass and move, keep possession, but with purpose. Attacking football using the flanks and displaying levels of arrogance and confidence in their play.
Yet Ryan Lowe’s Latics team is anything but. Its puzzling. Is he just a shit manager? Is he as arrogant as people say? Ive heard people say he’s not a nice bloke. Ive not met him or come across him, so Ive no idea. I do know though that if I ever do meet him and he comes out with the “what have you ever done in football?’ Comment, as he did at Preston. I will tell him to fuck right off and I will never step inside the ground again until he is gone.
If he is the actual shithouse that people are saying and portraying him as, I hope he is gone tomorrow. I really do. A bad penny can destroy a club. Especially if its the manager.
A couple of clubs have potted their manager today. Id settle for us doing it tomorrow. But in reality I can see silence, nothing happening and us sleepwalking to League 2. If they let us just go down with not even a whimper or any change of things at all, they deserve the 4k crowds they’ll get next season.

26 January 2026 at 4:58 pm #206749If you have a wingback who can bomb up and down, cross, tackle, defend believe you me he isn’t at your club long.
The player at our level will have 1 or 2 of those attributes but will lack in another department.
The only player I’ve ever seen to play that complete role was Ashley Cole. It’s a modern role brought to the UK by foreign managers who don’t mind winning 5-4 but right now at Wigan :-
1) We don’t have any player who can play wingbacks
2) Our 3 centre halfs struggle when the wingbacks fail
3) midfield constantly get dragged back into a defending role
A prime example was Bolton at home. A few days later Bolton were held to a dour 0-0 after been beaten by Port Vale.
But Lowe persists with this kamikaze style football even though it doesn’t suit the players we have.
Dansons tightened the purse strings so tight they’d be lucky get hot water in the showers that we can’t bring anyone in without someone having to leave first.
As I stated before I’d 100% play 4-5-1
get 3 in the midfield and get that battle won now Moxon here one lone striker but with the spare man in the middle and 2 widemen who aren’t filling their trollies incase they don’t get back and they can push further up diag balls in behind
If we had Ashley Cole type left right backs yeah wingbacks all the way but the simple fact is, we don’t, and we never will.
The sign of a brilliant manager is a manager who can read a players best attributes and he builds a system to bring out the best in his players and pieces his jigsaw together especially when you have no money to change things.
His jobs not to ask players to play in a system they simply aren’t good enough to play in.
Me?
Lowe won’t change so it’s time to change Lowe before L2 beckons. His system style is failing badly and for us to be 3 down against a club struggling in the bottom 3 spoke volumes
