I have been reading an old programme and the Managers page contained these comments:
“Today I am hoping we can achieve one of my ambitions and that is to have a bigger gate than our Rugby counterparts when both clubs are on league duty. It has happened before but only when we have had an F.A. Cup tie.
So far this season we have topped the 5,000 mark, while the gate at Central Park against Huddersfield was 5,500.
I shall be looking with added interest at tonight’s sports pages”.
The Latics manager?
Ian McNeil
The date?
Saturday 31 August 1968 v. Gateshead, Northern Premier League.
10 May 2013 at 11:56 pm #113134no doubt lotp and the like will be on here 2moro neetNot me Davy-boy. Due to your inability to sell all your tickets, I’ve got myself a couple of £115 ones – for free.
I’ll give you a wave up in the cheap seats if you like – a two-fingered one of course. ;)
Now, I wonder if the Otter and other such inbreds are going to call “Bullshitter” again, only to find out they were wrong…again.

Amusing that you’re calling your fellow townfolk inbreds. Is it wishful thinking on your part? Not everyone can be lucky enough to have a game sister.Pray tell where these free tickets came from this time? From Wigan Athletic? No. MOD? Possibly.
And again, if you laugh freely at Wigan Athletic, why have you decided to go and watch them yet again? Why not just take the free ticket, stick it your forehead, and pull yourself off furiously in front of the mirror. It’s cheaper and you’ll find it much more gratifying than having to sit through a game of ‘wendyball’ featuring ‘Wigan Pathetic’.

It is the towns greatest sporting moment
11 May 2013 at 1:35 am #113156It is the towns greatest sporting momentAnd all I had to do was log in, click a couple of hyperlinks and choose whether I wanted 1, 2, 3 or 4 free tickets. No queuing round the DW for 20 hours in all weathers, no requirement to have attended previous games, and no need to part with any cash.
I’ll enjoy tomorrow, particularly knowing its cost the likes of SDW a fortune for his big day out.

Bully for you
21 May 2013 at 8:11 pm #11416630,000 people in the town centre yesterday to see the local football team show off the FA Cup.
Correct me if Im wrong, but the best the rugger lot got was a few hundred on King Street to see Shyawn,Ellery and likkle Andy Greg bring the cup back in their heyday!
21st century Wigan is definately a FOOTBALL TOWN!
22 May 2013 at 12:16 am #114192With Latics crowds on average double Worriors crowds,FA Cup final,8 seasons in the Premier League etc etc…..
Is it not time this rediculous `media myth` that Wigan is a rugby town was put to an end once and for all.
Wigan is a football town with a rugby league.
Thats better.
It is a rugby and football town however the football club is larger now because of th exposure it has gained GLOBALLY from its presence in the EPL.
I will never forget being in a New York bar a few years back and a native giving me the rundown on the strengths and weaknesses of Latics.I also won’t forget the time in a Maltese back street when a little ice cream seller again told me his vast knowledge of Wigan and how he watched them regularly on telly.add to that 600 million watching us win the worlds oldest and greatest football tournament and that argument has been been laid to rest permanently if you ask me.

Couple of instances recently…
A mate of mine is currently on holiday in Hawaii. A taxi driver spotted he was English and asked which soccer team he followed. When he replied ‘Wigan Athletic the taxi driver says ‘You’re only following them because they just won the cup!’
And my favourite one…
Been speaking to a client in Trinidad who professed to being a Nottingham Forest fan. When I said I was Wigan Athletic supporter, he said like many people in Trinidad, Wigan were his ‘other’ team because of Dennis Lawrence. He asked if the stadium was still shared with the rugby team and ‘…correct me if I’m wrong, didn’t Jonny Wilkinson used to play for them?’

” Wigan rugger have won more silverware than us”.Of course they have because in their heyday the challenge cup like the league was perm any 2 from 3 !!! Come to think of it so is their world cup.Why do people get so p****d by them ? I for 1 could’nt give a toss what they get up to in the same way I have no interest in other minority sports .Wigan is a town with 2 good teams playing different sports ,and good luck to them both.
24 May 2013 at 7:16 pm #114468We can’t compete musically though ;)
24 May 2013 at 7:31 pm #114473Not worth debating it as been debated to death over numerous years, who cares what it is,you follow who you like
25 May 2013 at 1:45 am #114499Kin hell that was shocking.

It’s the ‘Fields of Athenry’, Taz.
Nicked by Liverpool and Wigan RL. And I’ll bet a majority of the people who sing it don’t know it’s associated with IRA supporters.
