is it something to do with their only ever win – in their one and only tournament(not including qualifying this year) i know cuba and wales have only qualified for one one world cup and wales have only ever won one match
9 June 2010 at 3:27 pm #36534That would be my answer too, LMB
9 June 2010 at 4:26 pm #36556is it something to do with their only ever win – in their one and only tournament(not including qualifying this year) i know cuba and wales have only qualified for one one world cup and wales have only ever won one matchQuite a few of them have played in more than one tournament though!
9 June 2010 at 4:36 pm #36561Are they the only teams to win in their first ever World Cup finals game?

i think i am right in the first or only win in the world cup – the only other thing i know about wales’s qualification is that wales qualified after a playoff elminator v isreal, and looking at the other teams non are european or south american and other than europe/south america who more automatic places from qualifying groups -all other fifa conferences have to qualify via a play off against another group(or they had to in the past)
so i will revise my answer they are the first/only games won by teams who have played a play off match to qualify
if that is right,i agree with you IT IS a complicated answer.
9 June 2010 at 4:41 pm #36565Are they the only teams to win in their first ever World Cup finals game? No. I’m sure Uruguay, Brazil, England et al would probably be on that list (I haven’t checked like, so could be wrong) and quite a few others. It also, in some of their cases, wasn’t their first ever game in the World Cup Finals.
9 June 2010 at 4:44 pm #36566so i will revise my answer they are the first/only games won by teams who have played a play off match to qualifyDid they have qualifying play-offs back in 1938?
9 June 2010 at 4:46 pm #36567Following a pre-season friendly with St. Mirren they all went on to not win the world cup :?:
9 June 2010 at 4:46 pm #36568oh and i think i know something else about wales qualifying for that world cup,i may be wrong but the evening wales beat isreal 2-0 in the second leg in cardiff to qualify ,manchester united made a 3-3 draw with red star belgrade in yugoslavia in the european cup.
the significance of this is on the way home from this match manchester uniteds plane crashed in munich.

i may be wrong but like my opinion of martinez i dont think so.9 June 2010 at 4:48 pm #36569so i will revise my answer they are the first/only games won by teams who have played a play off match to qualify
Did they have qualifying play-offs back in 1938?[/quote]
sorry griff i dont know, i only knew how wales qualified and looking at the other teams and how they usually have to qualify i added 2 + 2 and could quite easily have come up with 5
9 June 2010 at 5:05 pm #36571Anonymous
Not be the first time that as happened :D
9 June 2010 at 5:15 pm #36573i am intrigued by this so have been trolling the internet to try and find an answer and something i have come up with and griff touched on it – cuba- qualified for the world cup finals without playing a game – israel also got to the finals without playing a game, but fifa would not allow this so were ordered into a playoff game against wales drew out of a hat of european runners up to play isreal -wales won the qualifiers.
and didnt australia have a walk over for some reason-am i on the right lines.
9 June 2010 at 5:18 pm #36574Nothing to do with the way they qualified, if they even had to qualify.
9 June 2010 at 6:25 pm #36590isnt it their first win in the world cup?
