Referee – didn’t get every decision right but had an authority and fairness. Refereed the 1974 World Cup Final and awarded two penalties, in the first minute and after 26 minutes.
A really nice guy, he sometimes attended games at the JJB as an official for the Referees Association, and once seeing I had a couple of badges on my stewards’ jacket (Kick Racism out, JJB etc) he gave me a Premier League badge and said “you never know when you might need this”.
RIP Jack – just wish today’s referees were worthy of the respect you gained.
