Wigan Athletic midfield man James McCarthy cant wait for the new campaign to get underway and he is relishing meeting his team mates again and getting ready for the big kick-off against Blackpool.
The Republic of Ireland international only broke into the Latics first team in the second half of last season but that was mainly due to the fact that he picked up an injury in preseason and didn`t get fit until just before Christmas, now he says it`s time to get his head down and be ready for the start of the season.
McCarthy said: ‘I’ve had a good break over the Summer and have been looking forward to meeting up again with the lads and getting back down to work ahead of the new season.
‘Now is the time to just get our heads down, make sure we get ourselves fit and ready in time for the start of the season and kick-on from where we left off last year.”
The 19 year old might have made a late start to the last season but he did make a big impact with some excellent displays in the Latics midfield, he also bagged himself 2 goals which left the former Hamilton man a little frustrated because he feels he could get a few more.
McCarthy says that he is target for the new season is to cement his pace in the midfield and then hopefully the goals will flow, he continued: ‘From a personal point of view my main target is to maintain a place in the team, simple as that. And then I want to try and add more goals to my game.
‘I only got two last season which frustrated me a little because you’re always looking to get on the score-sheet. Hopefully that’s something I can do a lot more of this season.’
“When I arrived here before the start of the last campaign I picked up an injury which ruled me out for a little while.
“It was frustrating and took me a bit longer to catch-up with the rest of the lads, but this time I can get a full programme under my belt and I’m really happy about that.”
Wouldn’t mind ole Mc Carthy scoring a few more goals next season build his confidence

The only down side I can think of is his wonder own-goal against Villa at home.
The wierd thing is he scored his only 2 goals against sides playing in Orange in the same month.
Not that it really matters
