Billy Sutherland, Leighton Baines, Alan Tankard were great Latics left Backs. Out and Out Left Backs but could attack and overlap with mid-fielders. They did as much or more than any so called wing back that Latics have ever tinkered with and from a left back position.

So do you want us to play the old fashioned British way or to find new untapped foreign countries for players which you attribute a lot of our past success to?

You can’t have it both ways.

Bloody foreigners coming over here, forcing their tactics on us….

(What have any of those foreign teams ever won anyway?)

As I see it it’s quite a simple explanation. The majority of our players are not good enough for this division, Caldwell bought them and ultimately paid the price by getting shown the door because they were underachieving! Now Joyce will need 2 maybe 3 windows to fix the problem, hence his extended contract but in the meantime he has the unenviable task of avoiding the drop! The rest of this season is purely about survival and trying to get the best out of a very mediocre group of players!

Its horses for courses marrer that’s my point. In the Prem the majority of coaches are foreign and adopt these formations and the players are of a certain class to be able to play them. Where we are at now our lads are not of the quality to carry them off. As for the untapped quote, its exactly what we had to do coz we couldn’t compete financially with the big boys and we did it brilliantly. Sadly it didn’t last and we eventually got relegated. I would like to see us play whichever way is best suited to the calibre of squad we have and that’s why and its only my opinion that back to basics is the way to go st this time with the talent currently available.

Newcastle are the best side i’ve seen at the DW this season, but we gave them a run for their money and came unstuck by our own incompetency… Again!
The fact is it’s quality of player more than tac tics that is our problem. Their first goal was a terrible one to concede, but good run & finish by Diame (combined with a good give & go move). The second came about from really poor decision making by Kellett…

Upfront for us, just one shot on target. Players are really beginning to look uneasy to me, long season ahead!

But surely jimmy therein lies the problem. Your spot on we simply don’t have the quality anymore so we have to utilise what we have and keep it as simple as possible. Wing backs and lone strikers are probably the hardest positions for outfield players and are specialist roles. Great wing backs are rare as hens teeth and the lone striker is so reliant on his midfield being up to the mark. Its unfair to expect players to revel in these positions when they are lacking in the talent required to make them work as designed.[/quote]

Maybe a change in formation might work Nuneaton but last night for me, formation wasn’t the problem. I’m all in favour of a good double act up front, think Grigg would definitely benefit from having a partner.
Midfield is the problem as we’ve gotten three who are trying to play the holding role and are too static. Newcastle played lots of give en go passes yesterday one of which led to a goal, that is basic stuff which we don’t seem to be able to do anymore.

Also in my opinion, midfield is the problem.

And you only make a weak midfield even weaker by taking away one of the midfielders and putting another striker on.

Instead of one striker getting no service, you end up with two getting even less service.

Why bring in an extra striker. If you are going to drop one of our holding midfielders, simply replace with our most creative attacking midfielder – senor gomez who would create opportunities.
