Watching the amply proportioned Ian Blackwell bowling yesterday for Durham, it struck me that you don’t see too many fat b**ds playing footie generally, particularly in the Prem. Alan Wiley doesn’t count – he’s a ref. Always used to be good to see. I was thinking about what Latics fattest ever XI would be…I’ve only got the following so far though

not a latics fattie, but anyone remember gary bravin – blakpool player. latics fans gave him stick all game for beibg fat, then he pulled his shirt up to reveal one of the best 6 packs ever & all the latics fans completely dumbfounded.

Let me tell you, Bobby Campbell was fat. Great player, but I saw him outside the ground once and he was bigger than me. And thats not a compliment. Still a legend though.
I’m not insulting any of those Latics legends by saying they were carrying a few pounds – De Zeuww included, particularly in his last season. Ability is way more important than being the perfect body shape.
Forgot Mickey Quinn by the way, but he piled on most of his poounds after he left us.
Warren Aspinall when he came back with Carlisle at the end of his career, Remember being in the shevvy end and everyone giving him aggro all game then eventually he pulled up his top and slapped his belly to everyone, class entertainment for a youngster being in that corner.
Y_H – I remember Aspinall doing that for Carlisle as well – playing midfield from what I remember by then.
Jewell used to carry some weight when he was playing for us – I read an interview in the paper where he admitted he hadn’t work as hard as he should have at keeping fit, used to eat and drink too much. Said that was part of the reason he took management more seriously. Shame cos he had a good touch as a player.
