A very poor performance but the first thing I noticed from say 10-15 minutes in was the energy levels.
Now I heard via social media a few players saying pre season and training is some of the hardest toughest training they’ve ever encountered in all their years, and it showed.
It was clear as day that we left a lot on the training ground, in cycling terms it’s called “bonking” were you run on an empty and your legs aren’t there.
I think we’ve all been there visiting the gym and doing too much. After 30 minutes we were leggy, lethargic, second to every ball and players moved around like they were in the last minute of extra time.
Those players have all been over worked over trained. Whoever’s in charge of fitness on the iPad must have sh/t himself 30 minutes in. I bet his app for everyone was constantly in the red.
I agree, players need to be fit but you also need rest. You didn’t need to be a rocket science to realise we were shagged from the off.
The Leyton Orient commentators even said about 70mins in
He said
We look like we’re running on 2/3rds while Wigan look exhausted. Sessegnon should have been taken off at half time. He was out of sorts and on a yellow and it was only a matter of time before he got his second card.
I don’t think we can be so good then so bad. He were out fought and out run.
Take the foot off the gas Lowe, that side was exhausted
10 August 2025 at 11:41 am #205918Agree….also the midfield is tame. No grit, ball winner. Out muscled everywhere but particularly there. Has to be addressed ASAP. I still think Matt Smith has an important role to play in a more forward position than Maloney had him but needs protecting and at the minute we have no one to fill that role. Still early ,and we don’t knows the strength of the opposition we have so far played. Just worry me how easy Orient found us to play against.
10 August 2025 at 8:47 pm #205920Needs to be careful even at this early stage that he doesn’t ‘lose the dressing room’.
His interview seemed very harsh in my opinion and the defeat needs to be put into context.
They lost to a very good side who got to last seasons League 1 play off final , it was very hot day and the new team is still gelling together.
Add to the fact that the team always seems to come unstuck in London and it seems a tad optimistic to have expected an easy victory.
I said last week that a play off berth or a push for one would be a very good achievement for Latics this season it may take time.I think people are expecting too much from this bunch , they all need time as does the manager.
No need to panic and be careful going over the top in the post match interviews.
There will be highs and lows and fist thing is to get the home form improved and the rest will hopefully follow.
12 August 2025 at 10:16 am #205938Agree with both points,
Firstly the middle of the park? personally I think Mellish should be sat in there similar to how Naylor use to play in-between centre Half’s and an attacking mid.
He played an awful lot in the midfield for Carlisle and the odd times he played there for us last season he did well. He isn’t scared of running at the opposition when it’s called for so for now give him that sitting mid role as we looked absolutely toothless with Brenan Weir & Francois.
Playing Hungbo Murray I think leaves us exposed as they are not defensive minded and Leyton Orient used this and exposed Sessegnon numerous times.
So Fox? so he’s not fit, here we go again, when are we talking? mid Sept?, He should be keeping himself fit, it’s his job for Christ sake.
Players in the off season should keep fit to decent level or do they just go full kebab Benidorm mad ?.
And Lowe?, again he needs to be careful openly criticising players or no names pointing the finger regarding injured players. If doesn’t take much for players to turn on a manager.
were not one game in and we’ve Aimson Carragher (knee op) Fox out or not fit. Then there’s the rumour Kerr to Rangers buzzing around.
I said this before the season started let’s not get carried away here. I’d be happy with mid table and a play off spot would be a Brucey Bonus.
We’re going through the transitional period Maloney to Lowe and this will take this season and X2 summer windows and a Jan to sort.
Get Callum Wright in or Mellish but changes need to be made to strengthen that mid because once you lose that the defense are under the cosh like we were against Orient
Personally I don’t think there’ll be more leaving than coming in. I think we’ve done our business all bar possibly a centre half so its now down to Lowe to get this right
