It just seems a strange appointment especially so soon after the Old Trafford fixture.

Then again it’s probably difficult for the Premier league to keep track of which refs have upset which club. In our case it’s easy – they’re all b*****ds – except Super Lee Mason.

As Sammy says Dowd will definitely think twice before brandishing a red card at any of our players next week.

All in all I dont think the referee will make a blind bit of difference if we are not 100% at the top of our game.

Even then we will probably need a few strokes of luck.

I can see Martinez changing the tactics for this one.

If they play Valencia he will have a field day getting in behind Beausajor so I think a flat back 4 could be on the cards….

I hope not as Alcaraz and Caldwell suit our new formation far better than a flat back 4. Neither are quick enough to mark Rooney playing a flat back 4.

An idea could be to include Stam as right midfield/winger/extra cover at back and push Boyce over to form a back 4. Their midfield is their weak spot in my opinion ! This would provide us with extra cover at the back with 6 across the back when our backs are to the wall and also provide us with plenty of width. I would start with 2 up front as well ! Beausejour could play the same role on the left ! In other words wing backs with plenty of cover ie a back 4 !

The players have got used to playing this system now, appear very comfortable with it & they all appear to know their roles within it so I think it would be suicide to start messing around with it now.

With regards to Beausejour’s lack of defensive experience, if either wing back gets caught out when pushed up then the idea is that the “spare” centre half covers.

I’m a great believer that a manager should play their strongest line up regardless of who the opposition is. When you start taking away your own strengths to focus on those of the opposition then you are starting to play with fire

The only downside of the current formation is that Latics still do not have anyone suited to playing the strikers role – or rather we only have 1 (Sammon) & he isn’t good enough for this level from the more I see of him

I agree but being realistic we can expect to be dominated for large parts of this game we cant go out there thinking we can dominate the way we have previously.

Valencia is without a doubt their saving grace this season.

Blackburn played well on monday they kept united quiet for periods.

But they had Rooney and Scholes playing the left side of midfield firing balls out constantly to Valencia who must hit 29/30 attempted crosses into the box on average…

          He is practically undefendable.

I think to set up in the current formation would be suicide.

A 7-0 smashing of Man utd is the last thing we need going into a relegation battle.

Sorry but I have to completely disagree.

This 3-4-2-1 or whatever you wanna call it system played with the players we have has Latcis looking much stronger defensive & goign forward than we have done in a long time.
Take it away & you go back to the sometime shambolic centre half pairing of Caldwell & Alcaraz & put Figueroa back at left back where he’d barely played well in the last couple of seasons.
Going forward Latics seem to be creating far more chances & to change this system woudl take that away & go back to the system which was looking so poor & devoid of creativity earlier in the season.

The simple fact is that Latics are much stronger playing the current system. If you change it all about because of Valencia it takes that strength away – i think Latics would be far more likely to get a(nother) 4 or 5-0 hammering
No offence I just fail to see how changing a system that has brought only 1 defeat in the last 8 games would make Latics more likely to get a result

The new system is great yeah but what I am saying is if you think its going to work the same against Man Utd as it does against a poor Liverpool and Stoke then you’re in for a shock…

Let me be clear though my heart would like to see us go out in the current formation and have a go at dominating the game and winning with some of the great football we have been playing but my head tells me that is just not going to happen!

I think that would be decent tactics but hey each to their own eh !
