So it seems that Clubs in the Football League no longer have to compulsary produce match day programmes for every game ..
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44396446
Will we continue to do so ? I cant see us making much money from programmes due to the low amount that I guess we sell.
For me, I like to take home and read and im sure for other supporters its all part of the match day experience buying a programme, just like it is a pint or a cup of Bovril, and it would be the end of an era if clubs stopped producing them
10 June 2018 at 2:34 pm #169596I personally stopped buying programmes around 5 – 6 seasons ago. Why, i’m not really sure TBH, as i always bought one & like you crammy would read it once home.
I do think it would be the end of an era if programmes stopped completely. They are indeed part & parcel of football & many a person’s hobby.
However, i also believe the introduction of fanzines over the past few years has caused the reduction in programme sales. I think most would rather read a fanzine as opposed to a programme. I prefer to do so now. A magazine by the fans for the fans.
10 June 2018 at 8:36 pm #169604Buy both to be honest, part and parcel of the matchday experience, shame if they dont do a programme anymore.
11 June 2018 at 5:58 pm #169615Make them online only with the option to buy a copy. Must be able to print on demand.
11 June 2018 at 10:24 pm #169619Wouldn’t work for me Egg – Not only do I read them, I also like to smell them
12 June 2018 at 12:39 am #169620I haven’t bought one in over 20 years but I do understand that they’re part of the matchday experience for loads of people.
The problem is though that a lot of clubs make a loss on them when all costs are factored in so, quite rightly they’ve made it voluntary for football league clubs as to whether they produce them.
Whilst some supporters will miss them I’m sure those same supporters would rather the club have a few more quid in the bank to spend on players than lose money producing a magazine every home game

It must be viable to print on demand seeing as most programmes are all printed by the same people.
12 June 2018 at 7:54 pm #169622There should be some available in the stand for visiting supporters.
Also when were at away grounds especially the youngsters like to buy a programme.12 June 2018 at 10:24 pm #169626Most things in football these days have nothing to do with making money or affording to make a loss,
With the cost of most things in running a football club, I don’t think the loss on producing a matchday programme is going to tip a club over the edge.
I hope we keep producing one for all matches as it is still a big part of the matchday experience especially for the younsters.13 June 2018 at 12:16 am #169627Most things in football these days have nothing to do with making money or affording to make a loss,

13 June 2018 at 5:55 pm #169635I watched a couple of games in Switzerland in October and in Zurich the programmes covered a couple of games. Maybe that is the way forward, as the current rules of having to produce a programme for every game would limit that.
At St Gallen they even went one step better: the programme was smaller (about the size of a train timetable, but 52 pages – I’ve put a 10p coin on the picture for comparison), and were free. They were stored in a holder (a bit like the ones for train timetables actually), that you could just take one from.13 June 2018 at 10:18 pm #169636A club magazine produced monthly might be a way forward instead of a matchday programme.
All the reports of the matches and future fixtures along with club news, picture pull outs for the kids etc could be added. It could be a kind of ‘Shoot’ magazine primarily full of Latics stuff, but covering all the Leagues, European and World football, with other stuff like in a fanzine.
Knowing our club it would make a real good effort with something like that.
It probably wouldn’t cost anymore to produce as the paper quality used would not need to be up to the standard of our present matchday programme. It could also be sold at outlets around town, and be available all month instead of just match days.
It may not suit everyone, but I am sure the kids and teenagers would buy them. To be fair, I think I would and I’m ancient.
Maybe this idea could be put to the powers that be by the SLO’s. -
