Mr Cattermole springs to mind.
25 November 2018 at 3:51 pm #173317I remember Cattermole’s sending off at Wigan in 2010 – it was a clumsy lunge at someone who was doing him for pace close to the Boston Stand. It was a 2nd yellow. Since those two reds in 4 games, his game management has improved dramatically, and although he regularly gets booked, he now rarely gets booked twice in the same game.
Power is a marked man in this league and opponents are playing to it. Word has got out that if you go in for a 50/50 howl like a baby, and your team-mates get round the ref and say that he’s a dirty fucker who has already been sent off for that type of tackle, then there’s a fair chance he’ll be sent off.
I may be seeing it with different coloured glasses, but here’s my take on 3rd tier tackling. Sunderland came down with a squad full of players who have been brought up in a grade 1 Academy to play a pass and move game, and for the first dozen games, they have found themselves literally having lumps kicked out of them by thugs in shirts who are looking to make their mark on a big fish in a small pond.
Power, as one of those who hasn’t been brought up in a Grade 1 academy, is looking to protect some of his teammates by getting stuck in, only his attempts to get stuck in are backfiring because everyone is gunning for Sunderland this year, including the officials.
That said, coming back from 2 down with 10 men, and then being within a few inches of winning it shows character.
There is an interesting view of his red card yesterday at the link below. When you watch it, bear in mind that Sunderland were in black, and the Walsall player who was “fouled” is the guy diving in, and he didnt even get spoken to!
25 November 2018 at 6:46 pm #173337I haven’t seen the first 2 reds but I’ve seen the one from yesterday and to say it’s harsh is putting it mildly. I suspect if the first 2 hadn’t happened he wouldn’t have been sent off yesterday.

I can see what you mean about the “dive in” from the Walsall player as when he goes for the ball he is off the ground. However at that point it isn’t a challenge as Power isn’t that near the ball & nor is any other player. He is always 100% the favourite to get to that ball.
The Walsall guy does get to the ball & Power (desperate to make up for his poor first touch) jumps in when he’s never going to win it. As a result he’s late, studs up & off the ground – that’s a sending off all day long & is nothing to do with him trying to protect his team mates, it was a bad tackle. Nor is it an example of a match official out to get Sunderland
I’ve no axe to grind with Power, Sunderland or yourself Mutty but that was deserving of a sending off. Easily
