2007 had Latics making the trip over to Sheffield United needing a win to stay in the League. In a thrilling match which saw us go down to ten men (Lee McCulloch sent off), we managed to win 2-1 in front of a sell out away section (amongst the 32,604 crowd). Paul Scharner gave us the lead, but Sheffield pulled one back only to concede a penalty which one of their old players, David Unsworth took and scored with. The final score was 2-1 to Latics, we had survived, but looked on to see if Manchester United had beaten the cheats West Ham United… unfortunately their ineligible player Carlos Tevez had scored the only goal that would see West Ham stay up and Sheffield go down.
