Midfielder plays down first season ready to take performances to next level
His performances during his first year in the Premier League won games for Wigan Athletic, commanding the midfield, outmuscling players who know the league inside-out and raising the expectations of everyone at the club, all at the age of just 23.
But Momo Diame isn’t one to rest on his laurels. In fact the midfielder has been very modest about his debut season and hopes the experiences from last year will help both him and the team realise their true potential this time round;
“My first season went well, I loved it, although it was in no way amazing,” said Diame.
“It could have been a lot better, but it was a big learning curve for me and I picked up a lot in terms of experience.
“The inconsistency of the team has been well-documented, and we can all improve, including myself.
“I didn’t see anything specific I could put my finger on.
“The level of hard work we put in was there, and it’s just a matter of keeping going and hopefully it will happen for us next year.
“The team will benefit from having worked together for a year, and we’ll be working harder than ever to reach a higher level of consistency.
Diame’s blistering goal against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light was the highlight of his campaign, and the midfielder revealed how he’s planning on bulging the net on more than one occasion this season;
“The goal at Sunderland was a long time coming, and I was getting frustrated about the situation.
“But once it came, I relaxed a bit and hopefully there is more to come in that department.
“My game has always been based on scoring goals as well as creating them, and it’s a side of my game that I would like to show to the fans.
“I will be setting myself a target of five goals for next season, and hopefully I can get there.”
The 2010/11 season kicks-off at home to Blackpool on August 14th, opposition against whom Latics have painful memories of last year, but Diame is ready to put the record straight when the Seasiders come to the DW Stadium on the opening day;
“The cup and league are two very different propositions.
“And when you win promotion to the Premier League, it is completely different as well.
“I would like us to give Blackpool a very harsh lesson to welcome them here.
“I want them to know that they are playing with the big boys now, things are going to change, and we certainly won’t be going into the game with a lighter approach.”
Fantastic interview from Diame, Liked this one alot for the simple fact he is getting right to the point
