….who said “I want Wigan Ath. to be relegated, if anything to see how much of their fanbase stays with them once they are back in the lower leagues. (arguably where they belong)”
Why do we belong in the lower leagues when for the last 8 years we’ve been good enough to stay in the PL?
To put that into perspective. We’re 80 years old this year and have spent 10% of that time in the Country’s top league. We have only been in the league for 34 years, meaning we were promoted from the very bottom division to the very top in just 26 years and then stayed there. If you like percentages, we’ve spent 23.5% of our league lives in the top division. In that time clubs such as West Ham, Newcastle, Bolton, Sunderland (twice), Derby, Wolves (twice) Sheff Utd and Birmingham (twice) who I would consider to be bigger clubs than us have all been relegated. Two of them by us. Some of them have never returned and have even been relegated again since. The only team currently in the Premier League that we haven’t beat is Norwich but in the same breath we haven’t lost to them either. We are the only team to be promoted to the top flight but never relegated (or something like that anyway)
We may only have a small fanbase, but until that equals points or goals we couldn’t give a flying f*ck and I’m sure the majority of Leeds, Sheff Utd, Sheff Weds etc etc fans would be happy to sit in a ground with 7000 empty seats if it meant being in the top flight. Similarly I reckon most Geordies would be happy to see a few of their fanbase drop off if it meant winning a trophy.
So, I’m interested to hear. Why do we belong in the lower leagues?
Can’t argue with that I don’t think.
15 November 2012 at 11:33 am #96653You could also have said you would be interested to know what the rugby’s fanbase would be if they had spent 90% of their existence outside the top flight and hadn’t won any major trophies. All hypothetical I know, but the replies would make interesting reading.

All hypothetical I know, but the replies would make interesting reading.Or you could have, nay should have said “I have no interest in your Warriors drivel. I have more concern for Hydro Electric power installation in the Ulam Batur peninsula, by which I mean zero. Please could you return the favour in respect of Wigan athletic, and consume your days making child like displays saying ‘c’mon Wigan, tha’s got fort win th’cup’ in the run up to your challenge cup league final, and sticking them in your parlour window in your mams house”.
Thus giving us more time to concentrate on our own concerns, and them more time to concentrate on making crepe paper rosettes and felt tip drawings of Henderson Gill.
15 November 2012 at 4:49 pm #96659Every clubs fanbase will drop around 20-30% when relegated, we’d be no different. Its just another excuse as they hate seeing us do well.
Their hated comes from bitterness. We were a small club who grew bigger than them and knocked them off their perch. They’ll always hate us for that.
You can give them undeniable facts all day long but they will always shrug everything off because as long as they don’t want us to succeed, they will never allow themselves to accept we are bigger.
You’ll find they also change their reasons. It used to be that they got bigger crowds, but now they don’t, the common excuse is something about that they have local players and we dont?? I dont understand, but there’s certainly no logic to it what so ever. The only thing it proves is ours is a global game, and we are a globally renowned club, where as they only have a tiny pool of players to choose from, hence them having more local players.

England V Fiji = 82,000
Ireland V South Africa = 50,000
France V Australia = 80,000
Scotland V New Zealand = 67,144RUGGER “YORKSHIRE VILLAGE” LEAGUE
England V France = 8,963 (1st game)
Wales V England = 4,014
England V France = 7,921 (FINAL)…yes, i’ll repeat..THE FINAL!!!!!!!!Souper league “fans” need to concentrate all their efforts on keeping their pointless, embarrassing, cringeworthy, non – entity village game alive………….
Don’t worry about the biggest sport in the world (football), or teams that are in the most famous league in the world (wigan)
but non of these fact’s matter as we don’t have a coke head from scholes, who’s pumped up on steroids playing for us…….Therefore our opinions don’t count and we don’t have a say in the matter?????????
enjoy union in 10 years, we’ll think about letting you play at our ground if your willing to pay an increased rent….adios (rent) boys

I think souper league better ring this number………..
Although i, along with everyone else, have more pressing issues to think about. Namely, can caldwell/boyce etc get under suarez’s skin and get the little racist sent off……..Or can we prolong our decent record against liverpool in the top flight and avoid defeat for yet another encounter with our scouse host’s (think it’s 3 years now they haven’t taken 3 points off us, home or away)?
Need to keep tabs on that raheem sterling too, looks like he could cause us a few problems on saturday…..i’m sure di santo, fresh from playing almost a full half up front with lionel messi, will be back to his best following last weeks no show.
A wigan athletic player, up front for argentina along side arguably the best player the game has ever seen………………no wonder the worrying worriers don’t like us & want us out of business

Since you were effectively bankrolled to the top by Mr Whelan.
16 November 2012 at 12:37 pm #96672We were never bankrolled to the extent that we could buy every single player that came along like Wigan in the 80’s. The only difference is that we have only one wealty businessman funding whereas they had three or four and were up against part-timers every week. Before then they were also rans with a past.
