Whelan, though, is not concerned in the slightest at the lack of incoming activity.

“There’s nothing to worry about as far as the fans are concerned, nothing at all,” he said.

“The lads are back in this week and that can sometimes move things along a bit.

“The truth is, we don’t really know how busy it’s going to be this summer.

“We lost five players from last year’s squad, and those will obviously all have to be replaced.

“But Roberto is already well on to the case. He’s always looking and I’m sure things are in good hands.”

Most of the transfer talk surrounding Latics has actually centred on outgoings, with Chelsea and Liverpool continuing to be linked with a move for Victor Moses.

Whelan has already accused Chelsea of ‘taking the Mickey’ with their initial £3million bid.

But the Latics chairman accepts his better players being linked with bigger clubs is an inevitable consequence of life in the Premier League.

“We don’t know what will happen as far as who will ask for a move, who will come in for any of our players, who will be signing a new contract,” he added.

“All we can do is sit still and wait to see what develops.”
