Can’t help feeling we not far off being one of the best squads in this league. All about keeping players fit,Matt Smith particularly. Midfield looks excellent. Mullen pulls defenders out of position leaving spaces for our midfield to attack. Doncaster were disappointing, surely they better than that or did we just not let them get a foot hold ?……What a complete polar opposite to the football last season. Two biggies now in the league……I for one think they should be worrying about us rather than Maloneys sitting a different 11 up every game ……paying them too much respect……….
14 September 2025 at 12:56 pm #206099Agree entirely ..I’ve been thinking this over the last 3 games .. think a few other Clubs/fans may well be nudging one another mulling over our performances ..
14 September 2025 at 1:10 pm #206100I think Doncaster are in a false position, bar Bradford Doncaster beat mainly lower L1 clubs.
Its a breath of fresh air watching us but the key word is consistency. We need to maintain the levels shown yesterday and the opening day.
It’s definitely a brave setup playing 6 up the top end. I’m surprised by the role Matt Smiths playing that deeper midfield role. Since his comeback we’ve seen a different style of play from him with his no nonsense tackling, it reminds me of Naylor who sat infront of the defence.
Me personally I prefer 4 at the back losing either the Smith role or play one up top but that’s me. Our setup is for sure risk & reward football. Yesterday we played fast play the ball forward thinking football with our midfield hunting like a pack of Wolves giving Doncaster zero time on the ball.
It will be very interesting to see how Lowe sets up next week up at Horwich. Will he be brave and keep that formation and potentially risk those areas wide or go belt n braces and play one up top ?.
Wright Trevitt Smith were superb playing that triangle formation, it worked really well. I don’t think Cooper Adeeko or Wier should be added, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
I was highly impressed with Costelloe’s performance. He worked his socks off giving their No12 a mare of a day. He kinda reminds me of Lang before he left were he runs and runs all day, alot of unsung work but every team needs one.
So it’s fingers crossed for next week I can’t see a 0-4 but a draw would suffice

15 September 2025 at 8:29 am #206103I reckon Loweys philosophy is what Mr B said let other teams worry about us rather than the other way around and he’ll install that into the players.
Maloney had the players scared of their own shadows half the time, it’s like comparing chalk and cheese, I fancy us for a 2-0 win on Saturday, we’ll be up for this one!
Fuck the EFL
15 September 2025 at 12:28 pm #206104I agree let others worry about us but he also has to take into consideration any threat. The young lad on loan from Brighton Cozier-Duberry looks a tricky customer cutting in from the wing.
Look, I’m not moaning or having a go far far from it, what Lowes building is light years ahead of anything we’ve had in the past 3-4 years but we just have to have that bit of caution about us to nullify any threat especially from wide positions
17 September 2025 at 5:37 am #206105Looking forward to Saturday……..as long as I don’t cross paths with Horwich’s Ultras….https://youtube.com/shorts/iTtQ70zWvWk?si=gOBFHvyQreKQ89yD
17 September 2025 at 8:21 am #206107Brilliant Mr B, made me chuckle that. 🤣🤣
Fuck the EFL
17 September 2025 at 8:22 am #206108What about this, a refreshing change.
Fuck the EFL
17 September 2025 at 2:56 pm #206109The important player for us Saturday is Mullen. Young squad….his experience in playing in important games will be priceless. Horwich won’t ruffle his feathers. I’ve watched him with Costelloe…..always talking to him, applauding him. His experience around this squad is as important as his goals. Macmanaman is another older head who I’ve no doubt will instill in the players what is needed. Yes it will be difficult on paper……as long as we don’t get a w@@@ ref,red card etc then I think we have a big chance. Remember these lot bottle it in front of a big home crowd……long may the trend continue.
17 September 2025 at 5:41 pm #206110Wonder who the trialist was yesterday in the U21’s……hit 4!!
18 September 2025 at 7:45 am #206111Horwich games are never enjoyable to watch, I just hope we turn up. The game will be won or lost in the midfield. If we get that right like against Doncaster we’ll do well.
The key will be Lowe’s team selection. I just hope (bar knocks & bangs) he sticks with the winning formula and he doesn’t turn into the Tinkermiester.
I think there’ll be goals so I’m going for a 2-2 draw us hitting a late equaliser
I’m just looking at the betting with Bet365 were 4/1 to win but you can get 9/4 Wigan win or either 1-1 or 2-2 draw.
Wigan win both teams to score 9/1
Or
0-4 200/1 with PaddyPower
Fiver get you £1000

21 September 2025 at 9:31 am #206126Never has a post, or indeed a thread, been so undone by a lack of a performance.
If our squad is ‘good’, then Bolton must be potential champions!
Our squad is still bare and bereft of quality. Bolton have recruited very well, whilst we are still limited. Yesterday showed that. Where is our Forss? Or our Crozier-Duberry? Players on loan from the Premier League.
I was shocked at how good they were, and how bad we were.
21 September 2025 at 10:40 am #206127Have to disagree .Carragher,Saydee, Kerr missing makes a big difference .We handed 3 pts to them on a plate. Individual howlers and rabbit in headlights was our demise. Bang average league and wherever they finish we won’t be far behind . Mullen/Saydee would start for me Saturday……I’m still not convinced Costelloe for all his work will get us goals. They snuffed him out so easily yesterday yet Mullen did well under pressure and never gave them a minutes rest. Tacticaly I think Lowe got out thought but Raphael and Asamoah did well albeit they took foot of the gas. Confident when we meet again in January we’ll see a completely different Wigan.
21 September 2025 at 1:54 pm #206128Lowe got out thought and out gunned. I said this before the game, risking 3 at the back and they’ve 2 excellent widemen in Gale and Duberry was a huge huge mistake
The moment Duberry or Gale ran at us Fox or Sessengnon pulled out they left a huge gap and Adeeko and others did nothing to stop their attacks.
Had Tickle not been on it it could have easily been 6. M.Smith for me is *NOT* a holding midfield player, he’s not a Tom Naylor mopping up I’m sorry he’s playing too deep and he becomes nullified in any attack.
Maloney played him in the exact same role and got slated, now Lowes doing it it’s ok ?. I know he tackles well but playing were he does loses that clever slider pass out his game. He can still tackle you know playing more forward.
Smith yesterday needed to be in the middle behind one up top and get someone to hound in the middle again with what we’ve got I’d have stuck Wright in for Adeeko, at least he gets a toe in.
He tinkered with Wright off Adeeko in and he was a liability. There was no reason (bar a knock) Adeeko should be in after his performance against Doncaster, what message does that send out ???.
We looked better in the 2nd half because we made changes and they took their forward off and sat back.
Positives?, Raphael has to start, the lads a big tricky unit who got at Bolton, Mullin played well and so did Tickle.
Asamoah has to be in the reckoning. He is bullet fast and in behind he’d be on it.
Schumacher saw a weakness down the flanks and he fully exposed it.
I like Lowe, he’s been superb but for me he was kegged and fully exposed yesterday and what’s more worrying he was told the game plan before
