2 November 2012 at 3:42 am #96134When we played Swansea the other week, my mate from Newport took us to the hotel that the players stopped at Friday night, The Vale of Glamorgan golf and country club.
Three middle aged chaps did a mini “meet and greet” as the players boarded the coach. Got a few nods off the players, but Bobby didn’t come out with the players so we thought he may have already gone straight to the ground. Suddenly, out he came a few minutes later with hands full of clip board, brief case, ipad etc.As he approached us he nodded and smiled then carefully placed all his belongings on the floor and one by one shook our hands and thanked us for travelling down. You could see he was being so sincere and meant what he said.
I remember doing a similar thing in Bournemouth many moons ago when Benson was in charge. The players walked out like lambs to the slaughter, there must have been about 50 of us outside the hotel and yet the players and Benno trudged past heads down. Just two players acknowledged us, Scott Green was one and yes, Roberto Martinez was the other.
A true gent in every sense of the word and I’m so glad he is managing our football club. goodpostFrom Matlock to ManU

I was there, outside the hotel, I remember them all traipsing out…Kevin Nicholls, Gareth Griffiths, etc as we clapped them onto the coach and offered encouragement….was it the Royal Bath Hotel? I recall us Latics fans staying in the hotel just up the hill from it, The Russell Court, I think it was called. What a cracking weekend that was. Scorching hot, especially at Dean Court, and didn’t Neil Roberts score twice as we came back to draw 2-2. There were rumours going around on the Saturday night that John Benson and some other officials had been in a piano bar, across from their hotel, when some Latics fans went in and one had had a scuffle with Benson. To this day, I don’t know if there was any truth in it. I hope not. (He may have had some faults, and not been liked by all, but having met him, I thought he was a nice bloke. RIP Benno)
I think about 2000 Wiganers stayed in Bournemouth that weekend. Lovely beach, decent pubs and bars, (Christ, Wiganers supped the place dry I think!) and watching Latics in the sun. Wonderful. I know many hotel and bar owners contacted Latics later, praising our behaviour as beforehand, they were all a bit scared of us lot taking ovet the town. There was a big Police presence on the Friday night I recall, and a lot of GMP were down there, as we were talking to them.
Best ever away trip watching Latics that, for me.
3 November 2012 at 2:50 pm #96181Yip that was the weekend I was on about. Me and my mate was in the hotel just up from the one the players stopped in. We were given the attic room and felt like we was staying on the moon. Got up for breakfast threw shedfulls of full English down our necks and 6 gallons of orange juice as you do when hung over. We set off up the never ending stairwells to have a lie down as you do when bloated with a fry up. Got to the room and my mate turned round and started laughing. Whats up I said. Fekin room key still on breakfast table he chorttled, followed by ten mins of arguing who was going down for it. We came to a compromise and both went down. :woohoo:
