Does our new defender have dual nationality? Or does the fact we have signed him on a short-term deal mean we don’t need a work permit.
I might be being dumb, but I would have thought he hasn’t played enough games for the Ivory Coast to get a work permit.
13 January 2010 at 3:14 pm #18136Don’t know, but I presume if he was OK to play in Germany he would be OK for England too? Not sure if work permit rules are an EU or UK thing.
13 January 2010 at 3:52 pm #18140Well, as far as I am aware, we have our own individual rulings with immigration in the UK. I have known cases where players have been turned down for a work permit here, but have then moved to a European club. Didn’t Hendry Thomas go on loan to Monaco?
I am actually wondering how good this guy is, as I looked up his history last night and I was a bit alarmed with some of his playing record.
He started off at PSG, never playing for them. He then went to some minescule Israeli team B’nei Yehuda, playing only 13 games. Then onto a second-tier Swiss team called Yverdon-Sport, playing 73 times. He then moved to Bologna in Italy, but again, he never played. He moved back to Switzerland to another small club in FC Vaduz, playing 53 times, and then on to Young Boys Berne, for who he played 37 times. Next, he went to Germany to Borussia Moenchengladbach, playing 45 times, before being relegated to their reserve squad this season. Apparently, he has played TWICE for the Ivory Coast. I’m thinking that it won’t be enough for a permit. Or maybe he has a French passport?
See what I mean? Is this guy a defensive Ali Dia?
Going off that I am quite concerned. He only seems to have featured for either really small teams, in lower-standard leagues, and for a struggling Borussia Moenchengladbach side. And it seems they axed him this season. He was not featured in their team photo this season.
I’m thinking that this guy must have a bloody good agent! And I am also thinking that this is us just penny pinching again. Getting an unwanted player, for free, on a contract to the summer? Very poor. Doesn’t seem to have the class that is required for me.
And anyway, I thought this guy was an Ivory Coast international? Well why is he not over in Angola now then if he is so good?
It’s getting past a joke.
13 January 2010 at 4:14 pm #18147Here you go folks, it appears that Bruce was the one first linked with him a couple of years back:

Also, he’s French born, so that would suggest a French passport, hence no work permit required.
13 January 2010 at 4:39 pm #18153Many thanks guys for the keen Google spotting!
13 January 2010 at 5:11 pm #18158In the 2 years since then, he’d clearly fell out of favour at Borussia Moenchengladbach. Not even on this seasons team photo.
Isn’t that worrying?
The cynic in me thinks that if he were any good, we’d be paying a transfer fee.
13 January 2010 at 5:16 pm #18159From the other archived articles it seems that he fell out with the coach and had just been biding his time until his contract expired. Might be a bit of a trouble maker, but so was Chimbonda, and we had a good season out of him.
It’s only until the end of the season, and I doubt him being on a massive salary, so it’s probably a case of him proving he’s good enough for a long term contract.
13 January 2010 at 5:17 pm #18160He a no-risk signing to boost numbers. If he does well, we benefit, if he doesn’t, then he won’t be going to the World Cup. He’ll just replace Amaya in the pecking order anyway.
13 January 2010 at 5:18 pm #18161Presumably he’s been signed to carry on the job previously being done by Amaya. ;)
13 January 2010 at 5:28 pm #18165Roberto can obviously see what we can, and that the defence have been too open and dare I say too ‘soft’. Get some tightness in there.
Good point about him playing for his World Cup place. It might be a good idea to strengthen other areas in the same way.
I like the Caldwell signing very much.
