NICKY MAYNARD?
23 August 2011 at 2:02 am #70317Anonymous
Dont believe the asking price like £7 million
Wigan Athletic are set to become a surprise contender in the race to sign Bristol City’s Nicky Maynard. The Latics had a scout present at last nights Leicester City Vs Bristol City game where Maynard impressed with 2 goals.
Wigan initially were in for West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie but they have removed their interest following his desire to sort out a new contract or sign for Arsenal.
Wigan are believed to have tabled an offer worth in excess of £7m this morning to Bristol City which is expected to be accepted. The deal includes £4m up front, plus a further £2m when Maynard has scored 20 Premier League goals. There is also a further £1m which would be paid in instalments.
To make the deal really tempting Wigan have told Bristol City that if the deal is successful they would other the Championship side Jordan Mustoe and Adam Buxton on season long loans. Buxton is regarded as a player with a serious future and is a solid central defender who can also act as a full back. He has been making a favourable impression in the reserves and first team experience would only benefit him. Mustoe is not quite the finished article of Buxton but he has a good left foot and is solid defensive player who is best played as a full back. He also has been progressing well in Graham Barrow’s reserve team and he feels 1st team experience at a lower level will help him considerably.
Both Mustoe and Buxton are considered possible future England U21 candidates and Wigan feel the opportunity for them to train with Steve Wigley will aid them no end.
If the Maynard deal falls through, there could still be a loan option for either player, however the club would then want a loan fee of around £250,000 per player which could be a problem for Bristol City whose board have refused to sanction more money for transfers until the club has reduced the excessive wage bill.
23 August 2011 at 2:57 am #70321Seems a lad worth investing in especially coming out of Dario Gradi’s Crewe Academy.
However, I would throw the whole 9.5m Zog money on……………… David Wayne “Junior” Hoilett from Blackburn. The boy is a live-wire and can play wide or off the front man. Established in the prem and ready to go, none of this he’ll be a great acquisition and a future prospect.
Blackburn are at rock bottom on all fronts, with a poor team, poor manager, uninterested investors and my nailed on favourites to go down this year. Perhaps our old friend JR can have an influence on this young lads move to us. :happy-partydance:From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!23 August 2011 at 10:46 am #70326We need to sign someone who is proven at the top level, someone who isnt a risk. We seem to have run out of quality and this mon wont give us what we need.
Although if they want £2m when he scores 20 prem goals, we should save on that. If Bobs record is anything to go by !

Fair enough. But, which proven premier league goalscorer would a) come here and b) make you happy?23 August 2011 at 4:57 pm #70334I’ve seen him quite a few times on the telly and have always been impressed with him. If we pay £4 million up front I think he would be a good signing and he certainly knows were the net is. I would look forward to Whelan having to cough up the next £2 million when he gets 20 Premier League goals.
