I am not trying to lecture anyone on footballing tactics, on the contrary it was standish who made a comment about “average wiganers ” not understanding “the beautiful game.”

My contribution was to add that anyone who watches the slow, mistake ridden, lack of goals, piss poor defending stuff served up by martinez and his team week in, week out, and gets the impression that, that is the “beautiful game” are sadly deluded.

Perhaps you could please give me a “synonym” for phrase “the beautiful game” as i cant find ‘shite’ in any thesaurus i have.

PS. I’ll be in my “ivory tower” awaiting your reply.

I’m not saying that Wigan Athletic play a beautiful game, nor am I saying Wiganners do not understand ‘the beautiful game’.

‘The beautiful game’ is largely, as well you know, a reference to the patient build-up and short passing game seen on the continent. This involves at times, an awful lot of sideways and backwards passing, as the aim us to retain possession and wait for gaps to open up.

To what degree Wigan Athletic play this is a subject of debate, as if it was played to the levels of, for instance, Barcelona, we’d be playing like Barcelona and would not be at the bottom of the table.

I hear derivatives of the ‘Gerrit forward’ shout around me every home game, and a general groan is audible every time the ball goes backwards from an advancing position.

I can see why the ball goes backwards on many occasions, and I’m sure there are many of those who shout ‘Gerrit forward’ who can understand why the instruction is to keep possession rather than a risky pass forwards that could result in losing possession. It does seem however, that the preferred route in Wiganner is the forward one, and the natives become restless with anything else.

I’m not saying it’s the wrong opinion to have, just that the slow build up style of football seen on the continent will seemingly never capture a Wigan audience’s imagination.

Its not that bright an outlook actually, all i can see are major depressions.

I dont expect to, I find weekends without latics, even the “beautiful game/shite” served up by martinez, rather dull unless its a nice summers day and i can get a bit of sun whilst fishing.
